What are some good Machining books?

For bare bones basics of many processes check out any textbook written by Victor E. Repp. I used one of his textbooks and recommend it often: Machine Tool Technology. https://www.amazon.com/dp/0026715708/?tag=atomicindus08-20 I've bought them on Amazon for a few dollars. Shipping is...

    Sanding discs

Gone around and around with sandpaper and sandpaper reps from the pre-internet days. Klingspor has been my favorite for a very, very long time. I played with Mirka 20 years ago and found it good and when we bought some of their sanders 5-6 years ago we used some of their mesh papers, but the...

    Kreg Adaptive Cutting System?

I know Chris Salomone has been playing with one on the DL for a while and he seems to like it. I've been looking at the green machines and their MFT/3 but price has held me back. This is drastically cheaper. I have never gotten the 'quality' vibe from anything in the Kreg lineup but I'll be...

    Miter Saws

That's a decent saw for the money. I'd also compare features to one of the Hitachi 12" compound miter saws which are decent and around $200. If you're doing serious trim like wide crown, you may need to look at a slider. If you're just cutting average casing and base for trim you don't need a...

    Hello from SW Wisconsin

Yep....I need heat too. Also in SW Wisconsin. Winter will be here sooner than we think. Welcome aboard!

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Retread Shed

Summer is flashing by and I've neglected this space. The shop is trashed but that's normal. As I mentioned earlier, I got to head to New York and spend nearly a week at Jimmy Diresta's farmhouse, attend a seminar and spend some time with other like minded 'maker' types. Jimmy and Taylor are...

Ha....when I can talk about it, you'll yawn and close the thread......trust me.

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Retread Shed

Where does the time go? I can't decide which is worse here: the unbearable 95+ degree heat or the thick blanket of mosquitos. If you go in the shade to avoid the heat you lose a quart of blood. I've been quiet for a million reasons, the largest one is because I signed a Non disclosure...

Tim Sway has a unique take on things, I really like the guitar builds:

    what size crucible is good?

casting materials are a commodity. They are sold by weight. When talking about castings, weights are used. Similarly, crucibles are based on weight capacity, in the case of the link, 6kg. of brass.

    danish wood oil, everywhere?

Depends on what it's made out of and how much I care. Plywood shop stuff I'm less careful. Actual furniture made of solid hardwood gets all surfaces coated identically for less chance of warping.

I bought _________, because of Garage Journal.

From HJE. I'd have never stumbled onto the place without hearing about it. I hope to stumble INTO HJE this summer.

What color to paint shop machines

Most of the metals shops I've taught in were painted the Safety color scheme. Green, Yellow/Orange and red. Green being the main color, yellow or orange marking semi safe areas and red being cutting areas and pinch points. I was required to paint a new CNC gantry router mill in this fashion...

Face gluing large pieces of MDF

I've done it with screws and with screws and glue. Never noticed any difference at all in actual use. If you're dead set on gluing I'd use a disposable roller tray and a small foam roller. For gluing 5x10 sheets I use a full size roller for speed. If you think you're going to cut into it a...

    Cabinet height above workbench?

It depends in how tall you are, how long your arms are and how deep your bench is. I have uppers above a bench that's 33" deep. I stood in front of the bench with a tape measure set at 6" and reached as high as I wanted to reach and placed a mark on the wall. I figured that mimicked reaching...

    First Saw, Circular or Table?

Ripping narrow stock with a circular saw can be a problem. Consistency/repeatability can be a problem as well. It would also be difficult to let the tops of the fence run wild, snap a chalk line and trim the tops straight with a table saw.

    Backyard Wood and Design Shop

Nice CAD work and nice plan. I really like looking at others plans for layout and work flow in their dedicated and multi-use spaces. Every space I've ever had has been a preexisting structure that I've either adapted or just made do with. I'm always envious of this type of thread. I have one...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Retread Shed

Where to start....... I kept myself pretty busy since I last posted. I set a goal to make 50 pieces while I was 50 years old. I had that done before December, I still have 9 months to go and about 15 unfinished pieces in the studio. I may hit 75 total before September if I don't start too...

About.....15 years ago I was teaching Woodworking at the University of Idaho. I got a new issue of Fine Woodworking magazine and in it was an article about the top 5 or 10 articles/projects since it's beginning. That mallet was listed. I turned it into a lab assignment. The laser engraving...

Delta 31-731 Standing Belt Sander tearing belts at glue seam. Belt or machine issue?

I haven't seen it mentioned, but some belts are directional. Installed counter to the directional arrows on the inside of the belt they tend to come apart quickly. 15 years though.....Id put all my chips squarely on old glue.
