    Trusty-Cook, Stubby's Cousin

That looks like the ideal hammer I've been looking for to add to my "road box". Having both a dead blow mallet and a steelhead in one tool saves a lot of valuable space. Others I've seen have a much larger soft end, too big for my shallow drawers. I've looked thru your site and have not seen...

Disposable Nitrile Gloves - What's the "Sweet Spot" in thickness?

Do you have any problem with latex? I buy the Microflex Diamond Grip latex gloves. They're thin enough for all the sensitivity you need and if you snag them on something, you'll get a small hole or tear, rather than the whole glove splitting like the thinner nitrile ones. Bill

    Petroleum jelly as thread lubricant

Many years ago, I worked in the engineering garage at GM's HydraMatic division and built many a transmission to test engineering changes and updates. Every assembly bench had a small jar of Vaseline. We used it to hold check balls in place, lube O rings and hold gaskets in place for assembly...

Describing Fastener "Access" And Tools Needed For Them

My father was a flat-rate dealer mechanic for years, before he went into management. Unless he had a clearance problem, he would always grab a deep socket for virtually every fastener. Not only could he use the same tool for both bolt heads and nuts, saving trips back to the toolbox, but the...

Harbor freight Series 2 26" drawer dimensions.

I saw it posted here once and wrote it down. Here are my notes: All drawers are 22 1/4" wide by 19 1/2" deep. Drawers 1-3 are 1 1/2" deep, 4-5 are 2 1/2" deep, 6 is 3 1/4" deep, 7-8 is 5 1/2" deep. Bill

Do you still use a breaker bar ?

I grew up as the son of a dealership mechanic. Considering all the guys who constantly came to him for advice, both at home and in the shop, I took his words as bible. His opinion was "buy the best tools you can afford, treat 'em with respect and they'll last a lifetime". He never owned a 1/2"...

Is the Rockwell 504 vintage? Worth it?

That looks like the typical Rockwell piece. I'd bet it's powerful enough you could hook up a long extension cord and ride it around the yard. Does it say "Pittsburgh, PA" on the model tag? Bill

Is the Rockwell 504 vintage? Worth it?

I'm not familiar with that particular tool, but I have a bunch of Rockwell power tools I bought new in the mid-70's to mid-80's and it's good quality stuff, made in the USA and still going strong after all these years. Don't confuse it with the Rockwell-branded stuff they sell today that's...

TSA Rules on Tools in Carry On

A few years ago I was flying to Florida to help a buddy by checking out a new-to-him motor for his street rod. I had a dial indicator and a just-calibrated set of mikes 0-1, 1-2 and 2-3 in my carry-on. Of course I was searched. agent-"What are these" ? me- "Precision measuring instruments...

Was going through my pliers drawer and found this

Thanks for the history, Lugz. I've got a bunch of these from 6" to 16", some Snap On and a few Channellock. My late father was a dealer mechanic in the 50's and 60's. From the time I was a toddler handing him tools, "water pump" pliers was the only term I knew. I never asked him why. Now I know...

Hex keys, straight or ball end?

Your post reminded me of something from years ago. Way in the back of my box are a set of these from when I did a bunch of motorcycle work. They were a joy to use on bikes, as each one felt like it had its handle flex calibrated to be its own torque wrench. Bill

    Craftsman 12 Gal. 5.5 HP Wet/Dry Vac

Haven't tried it yet, but I just ordered a Vacmaster "Beast" to replace my aged Craftsman. I did a bunch of research and Vacmaster products stood out in terms of airflow CFM and water lift over most others. Not to mention the 5 year warranty. IMO, the inflated HP ratings mean little. It's...

    Decision: Gorilla or Werner multiladder?

Same here with the Werner. Had it for 15 years and still serves well. I still have complete confidence in it when I'm 20 feet up. For some reason it's putting on weight. It didn't seem so heavy years ago when I was still in my 50's. Bill

    Anti seize on wheel lugs

Working in a car dealership in Western PA for over 40 years, I've seen my share of corrosion-related incidents and I'm an anti-seize believer. Now that most lug nuts are covered, one application lasts through many wheel removals, IMO. However, the wheel-to-hub contact surfaces and the lug nut...
