    Replacement backup sump pumps

If you just want a 12v pump, how about a marine bilge pump? That's what I've been using for years.

    Water Heater Options

You should occasionally drain the water heater to clear out any sediment. But, if you have a gas water heater and want to replace it with a hybrid or electric? Don't. The recovery time is almost twice that of the gas water heater. How about reducing the flow on the shower? What is the...

All of sudden, my LiftMaster 1/3 garage door opener does not close.

Rule out the door. With the door disengaged will the opener run the full length of the track? Sounds more like the encoder is wearing out so it doesn't know the doors position.

Exposed work receptacle cover: the light suddenly dawns

I prefer the real nuts as well. I think the reason for the change is theft. A few years ago I need a cover and stopped at HD. The case of covers that was on the shelf had been rifled, all of the bags opened, and the hardware removed.

Split A/C doesn't blow cold (but condenser works)---help!

Have the owners call for service. It's their responsibility.

    Back Up Generator - STUMPED

Maybe post some pics of both panels. Measure the voltages as well.

First time for a smart switch

I'm using a Kasa HS200 smart switch, no hub needed. It's limited to about 5 amps but I'm using LED bulbs so not an issue. It's just on-off. They do make a version that will dim too. My run is about 60 feet. Works great, even when it's -10 out. My neighbor also has the same, about 80 feet...

Who Has Carbon Monoxide Detectors in Garages?

I've had one in my attached garage for years. They've never gone off that I can recall.

20A outlet update on property with Quick-wire

By Code, pretty much ALL replacements have to be tamper resistant. It was a requirement since 2014 in most places. You can't "grandfather" it either. NEC 406.4(D)(5). Check with your AHJ.

Best way to drain generator tank on a regular basis?

Convert the generator to propane or natural gas. No more carb problems.

    Wall Electrical Outlets

Your question is best answered by the local AHJ. The correct answer depends upon what year of the National Electric Code you are under. But in recent years, the NEC has required that replacement receptacles be tamper resistant depending upon where it is located. Your 2 prong receptacles...

    Garage door openers acting oddly

I agree. Nobody uses dip switches to set codes anymore. They all "roll" to prevent someone from hacking. Are the receivers internal to the opener or are they external? If external, you may be able to update them.

Detached garage with single 15A circuit - how to add AC (is there any way to install a mini-split?)

4 wires with 2 hots? Sounds like an MWBC - multi wire branch circuit. You should be able to run 2 15 amp 120 volt circuits. You don't need a subpanel for that. You could also set it up for 30 amp 240 volts but you'd then need a subpanel for your lighting and branch circuits. Check the...

Popular uses for a 300W power inverter?

I've used them to power a laptop, charge some camera batteries, etc. 300w isn't a lot of power but you could run a bunch of LED lights.

Anyone using an interlock for their generator?

I have an interlock. It is the way to go as you can select any or all circuits. Not all localities permit them.

    Need a timer that.....

This one: It's battery powered and doesn't need a neutral. They say 3 year battery life, I'm going on 5+. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Intermatic-15-Amp-7-Day-Indoor-In-Wall-Astronomic-Digital-Timer-White-ST01K/205478792#product-overview

    5X840 Relay Knowledge Needed

A relay is basically just an electrically operated switch. A small control voltage can switch a much larger output. Your 5x840's are available. It's a 24 volt relay, 3 poles, double throw. Just watch the contact ratings.

    Powerline adaptors

I also am using TP-Link powerline adapters to my shed located about 75' from the house/garage. They pair at almost 700 mbps. I did use wifi prior but found that it was unreliable in severe weather.

Conduit, outlets and switches on garage walls
