Protection from getting hit in the head with your lift arms

Yeah those things hurt...thats got to be one of the hardest things on the planet. I only seem to crack the back of my head when using a roller chair or backstepping, so no amount of paint or tape will help. Padding the arms is out, as mentioned. And a traditional hard hat is too bulky. So...

    Northern Tool rant.

I'd agree that Northern is slacking lately. There is a store near my parents house in NC, and I stop in everytime I'm in town. Last time I was there I bought a bunch of stuff, including a shop stool. Got home to Michigan, and discovered all the hardware was missing. Called the missing parts...

    Colored Concrete, Anyone Done-it ??

Do you have any pictures of the colored and stamped? My new house has a nice multi-color tile patio, but the Michigan winter is destroying it quickly. Another year or so and it's toast. I'm looking for a nice replacement, rather than replacing tiles every couple years. The driveway already...

    Steel over wood workbench

I took the hillbilly approch and cut the outer skin off an old fridge. Bent it flat and hemmed it around a piece of 1/8" plywood. My arm was sore for a few days from all the hammering, but it turned out a bit better than I expected. If the piece were wide enough I would have hemmed all 4...

    garage security

I've seen systems for sale that have cameras hooked to your computer. Never tried one though. They can record to the computer/net, and you can even monitor them real time via the internet...like a webcam for your garage or house. I saw it on a "Deal of the day" website, but I'm sure they're...

Any fold up, portable workbenchs here? No room.

The wall hinges are just plain old 3" door hinges. #8 x 3/4" screws. Leg hinges are tiny little 1" brass hinges, but I'm already looking for replacements. They are way to small and fragile for the amount of force you could put on them by pushing sideways on the legs.

    Tools on Casters

I've been looking for something along these lines for my workbench. I tried a hinged design, but the 2x6 faceboard split when I tried to pivot the casters into place and lift the bench. So here's what I came up with: Casters on the back, fixed legs on the front of the bench. Then for the...

Any fold up, portable workbenchs here? No room.

I just built one last night in my basement for snow ski tuning. I had a piece of 3/4" particle w/ laminate, so I used that. Got the details from an old woodworking magazine a co-worker had with workshop ideas. The article called for a wood top, but I figured 'use what ya got' Basically its...

    220V plug question

Thanks for the answers, sounds like red and black for my application. I didn't get a chance to look closer at the breakers last night, but I'll be sure to check the house panel and make sure all is normal in there. As well as double check the hoist breaker rating. But in the end it sounds...

    220V plug question

Thanks for the replies. Good idea on the emergency lights, I'll have to pick up a couple of those. Guess I've never noticed them for homes before...just commercial. I opened up the panel and also pulled the plug out of the wall. Used a volt meter and visual inspection. With one lead...

    220V plug question

I have two questions related to 220V service. I recently bought a house, and the detached garage is already wired for 220V. There is one plug on the wall, and another on the ceiling that the hoist uses. The plug on the wall has two problems - It is a 4 prong locking plug, and it is not wired...

retractable cord reel - help me pick one!

I'll second the bad review of the unit from Northern. I just got one for Christmas and its junk. Extremely weak, and won't reel in the last 10 feet. I need to look into returning it. I called them to ask if I can adjust the tension and they commented on how many people call complaining about...

    SE Michigan city ordinance laws?

Keith - just to make sure I understand this right...your maximum allowable total garage space is 2600 sq ft. So then you subtract your existing attached garage and that tells you what you're allowed to build as an outbuilding? That sounds like a decent setup, do you mind me asking which...

    SE Michigan city ordinance laws?

Thanks for the welcome and info. I can already tell this website is going to be trouble, much like the other enthusiast sites I belong to. For "dead storage" I have noticed the enforcement doesn't always follow the law, so that one could be tough to judge. I've made a habbit out of...

    SE Michigan city ordinance laws?

I have started looking at the south end of town a bit, as well as some of the townships to the west, such as Van Buren. I've lived all over Detroit over the last 5 years, but never down that way, so I've been slow to start looking there. I'm currently out of the country on business, but when I...

    SE Michigan city ordinance laws?

Hello, I just found this site and have read lots of useful information already. My question is if there is a website or way to find out the various city laws regarding garages...both attached and detached. What size is allowed (sq ft or % rules), location, encroachment, etc. I am looking...
