Obviously mileage varies. I've seen several posts with folks not liking the M12 Hackszall. I love mine. I've got a yard with lots of large trees, and regularly use it to cut up small and medium size downed limbs into City sized lengths for pickup, along with trimming yaupons, roots, etc...

The R series vises with the meatball spindle noses would be from 1942 to 1945. After that, Reed switched to the hockey puck nose.

Not a 21, but I have an unmarked 19 1/2. I think they're pretty common.

I believe this is a pre 1920 Columbian. I have a 4 1/2" similar vise, lacking the patent applied for markings. Someone may be able to use that to pin the manufacture date down closer.

I've had one of these on my garage reel for about 7 years with no problem.

Standard Vise.

It's on the side of the dynamic jaw. It's from 1936. I also have a 1938 Craftsman branded Rock Island with the same number ground off. If there are any differences between them, I haven't noticed.

Definitely made by Rock Island. I have a Samson 5229 that that has the Rock Island "573" ground off.

Oh Shiftless! I thought I was doing pretty well, only acquiring 2 vises in the last year, and selling 2. But your graph makes my 34 vises look like I'm on the high end of this problem. I've got to start selling!

Hello Hoorn, I've also got a Reed 204R, date stamped 12/42. It has the navy anchors stamped on it.

I think that would be "Standard Vise". I have one that looks like the Metro.

That's a grand old vise. The jaws are forged into the vise, and are not replaceable. A replacement for the swivel base would be pretty hard to find. It's up to you, but that old vise might be best just put to work as it is.

Speaking of Wiltons... I'm renovating one and am looking for a Wilton paint color previously mentioned here. It's more blue, not Rustoleum. Someone posted it here some time ago, but I can't located it. any help would be much appreciated.

Samson 5229 branded Rock Island vise. Not rare, but not on the spreadsheet. 4" jaws, opens 6", 51 lbs. I assume it's identical to the Rock Island 573. Painted dull black, as listed in a 1919 catalog provided by one of our members. This is a really nice vise.
