Garage door, diy or hire a pro

There is only one reason I'm considering installing my 2 new 16 x 8 doors.... to install to my liking. Not looking forward to it, but my experience installers are always in such a rush and the job refects the same. Been through it with my attached garage when I built. Among other things, I...

Stripping semi-transparent stain from cedar siding

About 6 years ago I built an 8 x 16 shed and sided and trimmed with western red cedar. I regretted from day 1, the decision of applying a semi-transparent alkyd stain which ended up way too orange. In hind sight I should have just used a clear preservative and let the cedar age and naturally...

    Samsung French Door Fridge Fixed!

I work with many of the domestic manufactures, Whirlpool, GE, Electrolux. They don't have as many bells and whistles as the LG's and Samsungs, but they are more reliable. It's known that Samsung and LG have high failure rates. My sister had a Samsung French door fridge and her ice maker...

Garage Bump Out Addition - anyone have experience with contractors in MN?

If your city has adopted use of the MN Building Code, and its going to be an addition, they will require a foundation under it. Different it if was a free standing garage, built on a slab.

    New Build 1200sqft or less

From one Central MN to another, welcome. I am also planning a 1200 sq ft built (30 x 40 likely). I'm just north of St. Cloud. I'm dealing with red tape at my Township so I can get the permit because I want to locate it on the lot next to my home that I own, but the Township requires a...

Is it possible to benefit from building and leap-frogging homes over time?

Not to get off topic, but an interesting side note, I was in Vancouver last Summer and was surprised by seeing so many high end vehicles driving around. I am talking about cars that are north of $100K, not to mention basic luxury vehicles everywhere. What is the source of all the wealth? I...

Is it possible to benefit from building and leap-frogging homes over time?

Thanks for all the perspectives, I suspected there would be some valuable insight to be had here. It reinforces a lot of the thoughts I had about the pros and cons. When I built my current house 12 years ago, the market was booming and it was very hard to find good sub's because everyone was...

Is it possible to benefit from building and leap-frogging homes over time?

I don't fear paying taxes, just looked at it as a potential way to leverage the situation to grow some wealth. I don't need to sell the lots, they are owned free and clear I can hold them as long as I wish. If I was to build a home on a lot, live for 2 years, profits up to 500K are exempt...

Is it possible to benefit from building and leap-frogging homes over time?

I apologize, this isn't directly garage related, but I assume the folks may have some thoughts or experiences to share. I recently purchased 3 vacant build-able lots at a price below market value, and I am looking to maximize my returns. I could sell them very easy today for a significant...

Garage is framed, bigger than I thought

You're definitely in trouble... with the old biddy behind you! An ocean sunset mural on the back wall to compliment the mermaid on the dolphin will make it all better. Kidding aside, nice building!

    To attic truss or not

The truss cost would be expected to cost more, just by way of more material and labor to build attic trusses vs conventional. Then the labor to frame and set trusses, additional decking materials and labor, handling girder trusses, framing stairs etc etc, its a snowball effect.

    To attic truss or not

Thanks for taking the time to post this video, very nice project you have there. Very similar in scale to what I am looking at as well.

    To attic truss or not

I am liking the idea of a raised heal, I did some sketching and I think it could work pretty good. When I drop back from 10/12 pitch down to 8/12, I fall below 25' and things look well proportioned. Some CAD sketching below. [/IMG]

    To attic truss or not

I don't think there is a stipulation as long as its designed for the snow load. In this area, 99% of roofs are truss design and most commonly you see 10/12 or 12/12 pitch roofs when there is an attic truss involved. I think when the building dept. looks at the print and sees you plan for...

    To attic truss or not

I'd be looking at 10/12 pitch, and I'd want 8' ceiling at the center of the attic. I'm a cad guy so I did lay it out, and if I keep the ceiling height under 10' in the garage, the lower chord of the attic truss 12 to 14 inch depth, I can squeak under 25' max height at 28' wide. If I did...
