Is sanding enough to remove galvanized coating from steel?

Thanks everyone, it sounds like soldering with a propane torch won't get hot enough to give off fumes. That's good to hear. I may give muriatic acid a go in the future if I really want the coating off for some other reason like attempting to anneal it or work it while it's really hot.

Is sanding enough to remove galvanized coating from steel?

Hey all. Working on my soldering and found the home depot down the street has pretty thin gauge (26) steel that is surpsingly cheap. But their thin gauge stuff only comes as galvanized sheet. I've seen some cool ideas for metal garden decorations made from sheet metal. I'd like to try it out...

What grit should I use to sand some rusty pliers?

Thanks Bones. That's very kind of you to say. I've been working on some other easy "restorations", but I wouldn't really call my work a restoration compared to what some fellas on here and YouTube accomplish. Lol. Been trying to get mirror finishes on my tools but am having trouble, even when...

What grit should I use to sand some rusty pliers?

Well I think they came out alright, although they were a pretty easy "restoration"... Absolutely couldn't get that one black splotch off the rubber grips. I think somehow they got spray paint on them years and years ago. I didn't try to get rid of the pitting as someone cautioned against it...

Can you use your own sand paper with gator sand drums?

I've searched for spindle sleeves or sanding drum sleeves on home hardware's website but can't find anything... Hrmmmm

Jack stand adapters - is this a no-no?

Matt have you considered using your same idea with a really hard wood? If you could use some sort of hard wood and make sure your wood has a nice big surface area of contact around the groove you've cut (to minimize pressure on the wood), I don't really see how that would present danger... Edit...

Can you use your own sand paper with gator sand drums?

I have a gift card to Home Hardware (Canadian store). I want a little sanding drum for my electric drill, but they don't sell many sets. Only sets by this company, Gator. This set looks okay, but doesn't have the highest grit I want. I'm looking to sand some metal starting at 80, then hopefully...

Jack stand adapters - is this a no-no?

For what it's worth Matt, I can't comment on the wood but you're making perfect sense to me. Tried to jack up my 20 year old Jetta using a jack like pictured (the round metal cup style) and frigged up my pinch weld where I jacked it from... Rookie mistake on my part. The way I'm imagining how...

What grit should I use to sand some rusty pliers?

Hey all. I have been gone a while, I'm in university and things got busy. I'm going to try and post some pictures of the pliers tomorrow. I'm fairly happy with how they turned out. My biggest annoyance is a ********* spot on the rubber grips. I removed most of the **** with the acetone trick...

Looks great. I would love to build one of those but gas powered bicycles require a motorcycle license and insurance here.

What grit should I use to sand some rusty pliers?

Thanks Steaks and Shiftless. I think I'll do a quick pass with the wire wheel in an actual drill just to knick off some micro bits of gunk that I didn't originally get off by hand (tiny specks of crud you can't see in the pictures). From there I'm not too sure. I have seen some of you timers...

What grit should I use to sand some rusty pliers?

Okay, I took them out of the vinegar as advised... Yup, they did get that dark oxide finish to them. For now I've soaked them in some light machine oil to try and stop flash rusting... At least I hope. I haven't done anything to remove that black oxidation finish yet. Just out of the vinegar...

What grit should I use to sand some rusty pliers?

Hey all, thanks very much for the advice. It's really appreciated. Steaks&anvils, thanks for the vinegar warning. I knew it would eventually eat into the bare steel but I didn't know it could happen that fast. I will go take them out now before going to sleep I told my materials engineer...

What grit should I use to sand some rusty pliers?

Hi old timers and young timers. I've attached photos of my grandpa's old pliers to the top of the thread, now that I have enough posts to add pictures. Those photos are what the pliers originally looked like. Since taking those photos I manually wire wheeled them (couldn't find drill battery...
