Above 1200 Sq/FT From Urban Pie Factory To Mountain Barn

Quick responses: bdbecker thanks for following along One of the things that I’m coming to appreciate that I’ve hadn’t incorporated into the initial plan is dedicated space for waste bins. In hippy dippy San Francisco we have curbside compost pickup which is a hand way of getting rid of my...

Kudos for stopping while you’re only (a bit) behind. It has taken me years to get to the point where I stop before I’m bashing my work apart and throwing tools at the wall. Re: fixing slips: 1. If you can’t see it when installed, you can’t see it. 2. You can layer adhesive backed veneer in...

Above 1200 Sq/FT Zeph's Quasi WWII Era Shop

In the spirit of showing rather than telling: Here is a waxed canvas bag I made early on. I did all the corners sewing to my 1/2” seam allowance and then back stitching. I’ve drawn over in black the preferred method of sewing around the corner with a continuous stitch.

Looks like you have the binding foot set up well. You’re in the right track. I learned to do binding by hand folding and ironing ribbon, and then pinning it in place. I had some choice words when I found out there was a specific tool for the intended purpose. Boxes are hard. One truck that I...

[B] mini tool review: festool mini CT15E [B] Small detail from the build. Of all of the things I’m looking forward to in This shop, having a dedicated dust collector for the miter saw, and a spot for offcuts is towards the top of the list. Well, personal beer fridge and bulk beef jerky is...

Festool CT15E Me: “i’m looking for screws and glue” Salesperson: “festool has a new vacuum” Me: “does it come with screws and glue?” Salesperson: “sure” Me: “shut up and take my money” The vacuum did not, it turns out, come with free screws and glue. But, it’s small, quiet, turns on...

overdue update part 2: the wood side of the shop In a fit of cold-brew coffee-inspired enthusiasm, I was hell-bent on getting the wood side of the house done and dealt with today. I’d gotten to spend the last couple of months feeling my way around what worked, and what didn’t. Highlight...

Above 1200 Sq/FT From Urban Pie Factory To Mountain Barn

Long overdue workshop update I have in fact been making things. Much to my girlfriend’s consternation and evolving appreciation, the things I’m making in the shop, are for the shop. Eventually the the things I make in the shop, will be for the house. I couldn’t be happier. First, time machine...

    Motorcycle Build

indisguise kudos for putting in the extra effort and reaching your own conclusions to reach the level of comfort that you want. For what it’s worth, the tolerances you’re trying to hit are likely higher than what went into decades of motorcycle mass production. When I was building my first...

New collection: a taxonomy of hammers

A selection of recent acquisitions From Left to right, broadly: - a selection of farrier’s pin and tack hammers. A cobbler’s lasting hammer. A farrier’s 3 lb brass hammer. A shingling hammer / half hatchet. A home-made iron mallet with a funny story, an adjustable claw hammer with no...

New collection: a taxonomy of hammers

Update: The Hammer A vintage book that a friend recommended, which has proven to be an excellent resource and fun to flip through. Subtitled “The King of tools”, the authors’ passion is palpable. What is particularly gratifying is that their taxonomy and mine aren’t too far apart...

    Motorcycle Build

Im certainly not a metallurgist, and a novice welder. Take any my opinions with a fistful of salt. In your place, these are the questions I’d be asking: 1. Will a brittle point break the rest of the weld / do I have ample welded surface elsewhere? 2. Is failure likely to be catastrophic? If...

Well done nicholam77 Per my previous post: don’t overthink it. The proof is in the shavings. Could the plane be sharper? Probably. But, if you can run a finger across the just-planed surface, and it’s smoother than anything you would have sanded to, you’re doing fine. Planing can be fun. What...

New collection: a taxonomy of hammers

New additions: the peening collection. Courtesy of an excellent contributor here, thanks Don. d42jeep There is now a bit of redundancy in the peening and general metal working area of the collection, but I was glad to get to include a variety of sizes and stories American brands. Now...

Yep. The Bison pedestals are the support system. I didn’t actually know that Bison had their own branded pavers. Daltile and a bevy of other providers offer exterior ceramic tiles. Nearly anything with square edges will work with the pedestals.

ravz I don’t have a SKU off hand, but they are 2cm thick ceramic tiles, 12”x24”, sourced through Dal Tile. https://www.daltile.com A fun note on the Bison pedestal support systems. I won over my girlfriend’s parents when I mentioned the system. They’re itching for a new deck, but anything...

Architect fees for dream garage design?

As long as the architect has a track record of getting plans approved, I’d take that quote, write a check and run to get the rest of the trades lined up.
