What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

I'm gonna push it back 7.5' to an even 28' behind the house. It will give more room to make the awkward approach to the right bay. Demo is satisfying and it feels great to have the whole thing wrapped up in one weekend. My buddies are into all kinds of stuff too so i'll be able to pay the favor...

What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

Oh yeah, i do. but I let one of my friends do the deed while I filmed. I'm careful about posting pics and video of people to the intertubes without their consent. Hope you understand :) Thanks for following along though!

What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

Update: foundation work starts Oct 1, followed by the structure on the 9th. :rocker: This past weekend I had a couple buddies come over to help take down the old carport. That was more work than expected. I took the shingles off the weekend before, but everything else was demo'd and cleaned up...

What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

I definitely can push it back further on the lot - it's narrow but deep. That would also help with grading along the back wall. Another 7 ft back and the back wall would be on level ground.

What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

Had some time last night and over lunch to model the new position of the garage relative to the house. 2ft can make a big difference. The approach to the right bay is not ideal. I have 7ft to the left of the garage to the lot line. Do you think I could pour the driveway wider to the left so...

What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

I was able to successfully walk the permits last week. Took two tries. It took the permit office about 15 seconds to note the setback violation :D. I sucked it up and moved the garage 2ft to the right so now I'll have to remove a third tree. Beats paying for major rework of plans I guess. The...

Loss of Garage Width: Need advice!

Eh, yeah that roofline is incorrect. Looks like you are almost doubling the footprint. How big is your lot?

People parking in front of house

+2 If the neighbor asks what you're doing, make sure the conversation goes something like this: Eddie: Oh, that uh, that there's an RV. Yeah, yeah, I borrowed it off a buddy of mine. He took my house, I took the RV. It's a good looking vehicle, ain't it? Clark: Yeah, it looks so nice parked...

    My new garage

Really nice. Good planning putting the back wall windows up high to clear the cabinets. We have only one life to live and yours happens to include a Ferrari. Kudos on your success and new garage!

    24x24 garage planning

If you want the lift, the flat roof seems like the way to go. Weigh that against a pitched roof with attic trusses to give you a bunch of storage above. Check with your code about how they determine grade. Dropping your slab a foot may affect your average grade measurement at the front of the...

    9ft Garage wall Options

How about StoreWall or similar for the upper 4' to store bikes, kakaks, etc. Then drywall the lower 4' with a transition strip in between (or StoreWall in a different color). And then a durable, tall trim for the bottom 1' ( go all out with diamond plate for example). That would look pretty sharp.

    Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT Woody's Works Garage

Great thread! I used steel frame gate kits on my last fence build that are still perfect 7 yrs on. I liked the idea of using steel tubing plus a truss cable to prevent sag. http://www.hooverfence.com/woodfence/ag.htm Though it sounds like you have a durable wood solution cooked up! I'm...

What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

Thanks fellas. I was hoping to keep the attic trusses for storage. Given the small footprint, the plan was to keep a bunch of stuff in overhead storage. I think rotating the gables to the sides and vaulting over just one bay could be an option if we have to go back to the design table. For now...

    Garage hoist

As PP mentioned, those bottom chords are not continuous. They are 2 - 2x4's joined with plates. The bottom cords of the truss are designed to be in tension, keeping the two pitches of the roof from flattening out by gravity. Definitely not designed for point loads at any point on the span. 250...

What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

Hit a bump in the road today. I was on the permitting website and they updated their documentation recently. I checked my zone and noticed a new requirement for setbacks that was not on the document i used for planning! This has been in effect since Oct of last year, but news to me :(...

    Homeowner abominations

We bought a 1960's house a couple years ago. Due to drainage issues in the yard, they installed a pit and sump at a low spot in the side yard with a discharge pipe out to the street. The yahoo who ran the electrical installed an indoor wall box and outlet in the pit near the top, plugged in...

What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

Roscoe, good point about the Tulip. There's a dead branch or two up there for sure. When the chokecherries were being removed, the tree guy said that tulip should really be thinned out. We're on good terms with that neighbor and we gave them a heads up about the garage build. We're...

What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

Thanks Bib. I would kill for an additional 4' of depth. I know that this garage is by no means extravagant when compared to many of the awesome builds on this site. It's all relative I guess. I'm coming from a previous home with street parking only. So going from wrenching in the street to a...

What can’t go out must go up – 25x24 build thread DC/MD

Not too much by way of updates. Final prints arrived in the mail today. Still waiting on the truss designs which should be ready in a week or two. It's getting exciting. To burn some time after work, I used the CAD package at work to model the garage and look at different configuration. We've...

New 24 x 26 build with lifts in NJ

I'd go with 10.5' walls, 12/4 pitch with scissor trusses. The gables are on the sides of the garage. Have the door tracks run parallel to the roof/scissor trusses. This way you have the clearance on both sides of the garage (in the center, where you need it most) to put your 2 x 4-post lifts. If...
