2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

Don't know why, but around here starting this time of year and into the fall it often seems when the "man sales" start to pop up in earnest. Nothing to show for a couple of Friday sales including a large family run estate sale with a barn full of man stuff. Unfortunately looked decidedly picked...

Took a flyer for $5 and took it home and cleaned it up including corrosion from the battery. New battery in it and looks like...

Yes, some give out numbers instead which come to think about is a better system. Deep pocketed petro-chemical company who had their local facilities safety group go through our whole building hunting down those 4 legged chairs. Was amazed how quickly the chairs got swapped out. Thanks 3bay...

2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

Many years ago, lets say the very portly gentlemen in the cube next to mine toppled over due to leaning back on a four leg chair. Hit the floor and the whole floor shook and folks were like what the hell was that ? Myself and some others rushed over here he was like a turtle on its back but...

Advertised garage sale on Wednesday around the corner from the fair but came up empty but while leaving down the same road drive by some ladies dragging stuff out for what looked like a sale so pulled...

Went to probably 6 sales between yesterday and today and alas only the first sale had much in my wheelhouse. 2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

For things I'm interested in I'm another one that plays it close to the vest and avoids spilling any information that could effect pricing or give picking competitors knowledge. Few years back a guy told me I paid to much for a Snap-On wrench set and I just said ahh man , the set was a mint set...

A couple of professional run man-cave estate sales this weekend. Been a long time since seeing any man-cave sales. First up was the house of a local GM worker who raced cars as well as built race cars and hot-rods. Whole lot of old school tools, engine blocks, transmissions, etc. Prices were...

Been slow in my parts for sales with quality tools. Hit 4 sales this weekend and 3 out of 4 were duds but the last one bore some fruit. Craftsman top box from a couple weeks ago that needs some clean-up. Looks to be circa 1949 or so. Paid $30 for it. Also pictured, Metabo 5" grinder from this...

Adding knee braces to new pole building

Looks like your trusses are designed to rotate at their ends when subjected to vertical loads, adding knee braces would restrain the rotation in some manner and throw loads into the trusses that they are were not designed for. Also the roof diaphragm and shear walls maybe so stiff that any knee...

Lots of estate and garage sales this time of year especially if you need furniture, ladies & kids clothes and shoes, glassware/kitchenware stuff etc. but been pretty slow tool wise. Not to mention the numerous FB ads that fail to mention one or combination of times, dates, addresses, types of...

Now semi-retired so any work I have as long as I get it done by the scheduled due date I end up having a lot of flexibility in my time which allows me now to hit sales during the normal work week if need be. That said, Thursday professional sale starting at 8:00 am , next to nothing priced and...

Concrete one sided pour issue. We tried today on a 4 foot wall and had vertical lift lost $700 in concrete

Your knee braces cause a vertical lift at the base of your sidewall when the wall is subjected to the lateral pressure of the fluid concrete. Much better to brace all the way across from side wall to side wall if possible.

    Everybody's got some Snap-On...

I have no allegiance to Snap-On but that said, I have a whole tool box full of Snap-On wrenches, sockets, etc. picked up for pennies on the dollar at estates and yard sales and that is the only way I buy any Snap-On, Mac, Blue Point etc. Has to be a good deal or I will do without.

    Concrete for lift

Typical slab on grade is designed as un-reinforced concrete. In other words the slab thickness is determined based upon eliminating cracking of the concrete in tension due to bending, etc., with an appropriate safety factor. Steel reinforcing is often designed and added simply to help control...

Codes for 115 mph in Iowa county Iowa?

In the regular IBC code for commercial construction wind pressures will be essentially the same whether using Ultimate Strength design (USD) and its appropriate load combinations or using allowable working stress design (ASD) and its appropriate load combinations. That said, using Vult = 115 mph...
