    Champion wrench?

Amen. Which brings us to another aspect of this circumstance (sorry, Leviton, if I'm kind of hijacking this thread). What might be the 'cash value' of this information? Traditional collector references in book form are a traditional avenue for preserving such information in a permanent form, but...

four.cycle: thank you for your extensive research on this subject.

    Champion wrench?

This is an example of a subject that has nagged at me. The preservation of the wealth of information and research on tool history posted on the internet is more tenuous than what we'd like to think. A number of sites and forums have been set up and maintained by the efforts of one man having the...

Need help identifying these Craftsman tools

The story behind the RHFT type study is interesting. Member b.well was seeking info on the RHFT ratchets and I happened to start researching it, only to discover there wasn't a lot of solid information available. The more I looked into it, the more I realized that someone needed to take the time...

    small size wrenches < 10 mm / 3/8"

I work on a lot of smaller stuff. I agree with kbeefy that there is little difference between the short and standard lengths at these small opening sizes, so I would go with the standard length. However, there are times when those little guys can take some torque to break them loose. For these...

Need help identifying these Craftsman tools

It's often difficult to obtain an exact year of manufacture with Craftsman wrenches, but in the case of your combo set, we're fortunate to be able to narrow it down quite a bit because of the markings. As Lesserstore mentioned, the wide beams are one indication. Research has established that the...

Big Tap and Die Sets, What's going on?

If you haven't already, I'd post this question in the General Tool Discussion section where all the tool enthusiasts hang. That's where I usually hang. I just happened onto this thread because I was killing time waiting for wifey to get off the phone, otherwise I don't browse the section of the...

    Wrench manufacturer identification help

I seem to recall that the trade laws requiring a COO mark also allowed that mark to be on a label instead of the item itself. It may be that the COO mark was on a part of the label that's missing.

    Wrench manufacturer identification help

I'm with Lugz here. Copy of my comment when OP originally posted this thread in the General section: I agree. I don't think it's a Craftsman either. The finishing grinding of the forging is not very good quality either. Take a look at the countersinking around the hanging hole, and the...

    Wrench manufacturer identification help

I think you just need to post it again in the Vintage section.

    Wrench manufacturer identification help

I agree. I don't think it's a Craftsman either. The finishing grinding of the forging is not very good quality either. Take a look at the countersinking around the hanging hole, and the unevenness of the flats around the recess. If from WW2, this would have been the age of the underline-C logo...

    Split cotter vs split casting

Thanks for the clarification. It looks like I might have understood about the "split casting" which is what I think the drill press repair description I had read was talking about making. I was clueless about the split cotter. It would seem one of your suppositions might be correct in that the...

    Split cotter vs split casting

I just recently read a thread about an old Craftsman drill press having a quill with play, but there was no means to tighten it. Apparently, the way to repair this is to cut a slot into the housing and then install bolts so tightening them will serve to bring the sides of the cut slot closer...

How much should new bandsaw vibrate?

Just an interesting note to add...I have a 1950s Atlas 912 I recently tuned with new blade, guide blocks, urethane tires and thrust bearings. My arrangement is the type where the rear blade edge rides on the side face or 'shoulder' of the outer race. I was experiencing problems with the blade...

    Old Ratchet??

I agree. The grip looks almost certainly to be of Walden design.

    who hangs spanners?

I have limited space in my roll around tool chest. I'm a DIYer so I don't need a pro setup. I have one chest drawer commited to my mainline combo wrenches, SAE and metric, regular and ratcheting. The larger sizes over 1" I keep hanging on the pegboard. Long pattern combo wrenches, long and short...

    MF corner brace

Let us know the results of the soaking. I found an interesting video where the host was showing two of these corner braces. On one of them, the cover dome had apparently been replaced by a home-made cover and the rivets replaced with screws. The owner may have destroyed the original cover...

Ridiculous Chinese-to-English Translation Fails on Tool Packaging, in Ads and Instruction Manuals

I was just reading the GJ thread on hilarious brand names found on Amazon, and it got me to thinking about all the crazy translation fails on packaging, in ad descriptions and instruction manuals of Chinese products intended to be sold in the U.S. market. We've all seen them. I just recently...

    Joining Multiple Garages After Inspection

Don't want to be a buzz-kill, but I think there's an issue that's being danced around. It seems the main theme here is, "how can I break the law and not get caught?" That's exactly how a criminal thinks. I live in an agricultural zoning, but it's almost kind of of a suburban setting. In other...

    Deep socket broach depth? Why?

Just my 2 cents, but in rooting around used sockets at yard sales for years, the occasional cracked sockets I encountered (often hard to notice until you get them home) are almost always fully broached deep wells. And so one of the factors that mfrs might consider is socket strength?
