    The VISES of Garage Journal

Maybe it wasnt obvious enough, but I was asking about thoughts on the repair. I am not asking for all of the snarky responses that I have been getting. That doesnt help anything. Some people have been cool and pointing things out, while others are are acting like elitists. These are vises...

So does everyone else. But that isnt what I asked. Does anyone have any constructive input?

Here's the repair. I was told "You can back into that with a Mac Truck and it aint going nowhere." So we'll see. If it works, definitely worth the $100 total for vise and repair. If not, well, it wouldnt be the first $100 lesson I've learned.

This. 1) already found someone, who I was told by other welding shops "if anyone can fix it, they can" 2) I am willing to gamble a bit. All told it'll be less than $100. If it works, great. If not, well I learned something.

From other things I have read on the internet, it could be ok for a day, could be ok for 5 years. I'm gambling. Worst comes to worst, I still have this American made Columbian 3.5" Bench vise.

Thank guys. I appreciate what you are saying, and didnt see these responses until just now. I wasn't necessarily looking for a vise like this, just happened upon it. I was excited, and didnt know what to look for. Now I have some clue. That being said, I went down, spoke with the guy. He...

I found a welding place nearby that said that they can fix it. Another place I called gave me their number and said "if anyone can fix it, they can." I only have $40 into the vise, so another $50 to fix it and I'll still be ahead if I bought a new one. If it doesn't work, well, lesson learned.

Yeah, thanks. I didnt know it was broken. I didnt know what to look for. The woman I purchased it from offered no information in terms of repair that had been done to it.

Well, you were right. It fell off of the stump and broke. Now I need to learn how to weld.

Good Gawd man! That thing is....just wow. For my needs, this vise will be plenty. The only other vise I would need is a post leg vise that is made to take a beating.

That's awesome! Thanks for that. I cant wait to take it apart, clean it up a bit and mount it. It actually weighs more than my anvil. Anvil is 60lbs (about 90 with chain wrapped) and the anvil is 90lbs.

I'll look into that when I clean it up. Thanks for that. I was going to take them off, clean them up and see what screws I need to put them back in. I will be using it mostly for holding hot metal while I twist or bend it, or to hold metal while cutting. I'll keep the hard hammering for my...

I know that. I was just curious as I had never seen this logo before and this was the first place I saw that had a similar vise. I'm just happy to have a monster vise sitting next to my anvil.

I JUST picked up this same vise last night. I have been racking my brain trying to figure out who makes it. It's a 90lb BEAST! So, who does make it?
