    Under Cabinet LED Lights?

I recently bought these for my mom's kitchen. I liked that they are rechargeable via USB, use a magnet to stick under the cabinet, and you can change the light colors. The motion sensor is nice to have, so that they automatically turn on/off and don't drain the batteries if you forget to turn...

New house - furnace cycling question

I just pulled my data from my Ecobee thermostat from last night. It's 13F outside, and I keep it at 69F when we sleep. Thermostat is set to a 1F delta, and it runs for about 15 minutes then shuts off. Time between off/on is about 20 minutes.

Semi-DIY HVAC? Can I pay someone to run calcs, size system and ducting, and then install myself? Local companies are hacks

I used 2x6's to raise the floor up to protect the electrical wiring that was all across there. (Romex, alarm/security wiring, thermostat.) I also added some R-19 insulation in between the 2x6's in that area as well.

Semi-DIY HVAC? Can I pay someone to run calcs, size system and ducting, and then install myself? Local companies are hacks

I decided to put in a service platform in my attic for my HVAC. Should make replacing it much easier, and servicing it a piece of cake.

Connecting 4g wire to 12g wire

Just wanted to mention that if it indeed has five, 90 degree bends, it's not to Code. Per the NEC: “There shall not be more than the equivalent of four quarter bends (360 degrees total) between pull points, for example, conduit bodies and boxes.”

Adding a propane tank vs running a gas line

I was on propane for years. When Natural Gas came into my neighborhood, they offered to swap out appliances for free. (Bill credits.) I thought it was a scam, so I blew it off. A few months later, I notice that a lot of my neighbors don't have tanks anymore. Whoops! I called the gas...

Garage door and window alarm options?

I'm running a Samsung SmartThings hub, along with a bunch of Z-Wave devices that can do what you are looking to do. You can get door/window trigger switches, garage door tilt switches, motion sensors (indoor or outdoor) and then setup smart wall switches, smart receptacles, or separate plug-in...

    Dedicated, not retrofit, LED strips

I used a different brand of light, but they sound similar to yours. 8' LED strips, ordered in bulk to get the best price. (I got two cases of 25, used 30, kept some spares, and sold some to a couple of friends.) I didn't want to dump a lot of cash on lighting when I was building the shop. I...

Semi-DIY HVAC? Can I pay someone to run calcs, size system and ducting, and then install myself? Local companies are hacks

Understood, and totally agree. Nobody wants to climb up into the attic when it's 100+ degrees in Oklahoma. It's like being in an oven up there. (Yes, I've done it. No, it wasn't fun.)

    100a main to 100A sub?

Technically, no... but as WD mentioned, what you really 'need' depends on the load calcs. It also depends on the physical size of your existing main panel, and if you have a space available for a breaker to feed your sub-panel. The cost is dependent on your location, as wages vary from one...

Is there a limit how many lines can come off of a transformer to a residence?

Hard to tell without knowing the size of the transformer. Is that the end of the run where the high voltage ends? My guess is yes... and if he needed to have service installed then they would either: * Extend the HV line, add some poles, and provide him with his own service transformer, or...

Semi-DIY HVAC? Can I pay someone to run calcs, size system and ducting, and then install myself? Local companies are hacks

I'm curious as to what kind of 'trouble' you are referring to, other than what you mentioned? Equipment problems due to location? Heat loss/gain from ducts in the attic? I can certainly see some service tech not wanting to climb up there if the space is an issue... but what else is there to...

Newbie Insulation Question Existing Metal Building

I bet! I lived in Palmdale from '97 - 2002, and did some work up there in the AV and beyond. Good times.

Newbie Insulation Question Existing Metal Building

True... I was working in the attic space of LA ARTCC when a B1-B came in hot just north of us at Edwards. That damned boom shook the building and we saw the dust just '****' from every surface in that space. Thankfully, the military typically does not do this very often, if at all anymore...

    Cement and winch

Seems like an interesting idea... the question would be, what are the design forces that you're going for here? Will it be a smooth approach into the shop, or will you be having a lip at the door to keep water out? I ask, because any obstruction to the rolling of the tires will add additional...

What WiFi thermostat do you folks recommend?

We have an Ecobee 3. We added multiple remote temperature sensors/motion detectors so that it knows where we are in the house and what the average temperatures are so that it can adjust the HVAC based on this info. I have a schedule setup that is our 'typical' times for being home, going to...

Adding motion sensor to existing flood light circuit

I did exactly what you are saying you want to do. I decided I wanted more control of the house lighting, so I started with a Smarthings home hub by Samsung. It acts as the base unit that communicates between the app on my phone (to set everything up and control it) and the items on the ZWave...

    Which lift to buy?

I went with the Atlas OH-10X because it's wider and taller than a regular two-post lift. I drove down to Arlington, TX and picked it up myself, saving myself the S/H fees and risking any damage to the lift during delivery by the shipping company...

    Temporary Heater?

It can. My wife bought me a 125k Btu/h forced air propane heater and large propane cylinder. (DeWalt brand.) I have a 40x50x14 shop with an open span ceiling and a 4/12 pitch. It's about 21' at the peak. It didn't take long, and I had to shed clothing because I was starting to sweat.
