What to look for in a metal lathe

I have an old South Bend 9 inch with a quick change gear box. These are great little hobby lathes and there were a lot of them sold. Mine only has a 3/4 hole through the headstock, which sometimes is a problem. A lot of schools have gotten away from teaching shop and have sold theirs, and a lot...

Can I paint a wood floor with oil on it?

Maybe throw a bunch of cat litter down for a while and grind that in, then sweep it real good. I bet the paint would stick ok after that.

    cutting oil

Mike, if those are the rivits on an old Ford frame, they are really tough to get out. I remember drilling out the rivits on the crossmember of a 33 Ford - even after I had a hole through, it was still held pretty tight. I had to drill right to the diameter of the rivit - starting on center is...

I hate "school me in ....." To me, school is a place - learning is what you are supposed to be doing there.

    hand plane blade angle

Thanks - I would have thought the back side was supposed to be flat but they are showing a slight angle there too. It's a 9 inch long plane, I don't know what it would be called.

    hand plane blade angle

Does anyone know what the angle is supposed to be on the cutting blade of a hand plane? I was going to take the blade over to a friend with a machine shop to sharpen. He can put it in a precision grinder, but I just know he'll ask me what angle to set it at. Thanks Jim S.

    old spray gun

I have an old "Milwaukee" syphon type spray gun. I don't think it's made by Milwakee tools, it also has a "MP" in a circle on the handle. Milwaukee Pnuematic maybe? It's at least thirty years old. It works crappy now and I would like to fix it. I took it all apart and cleaned it - (it needed it...

Wanting to make a parts washer

What is the best fluid to use? Years ago at work I would get mineral spirits and that really cleaned good - left the parts sort of white and no oily feel to them. Not good for the hands at all though. When it became difficult to get rid of the old stuff I had to get SafetyClean come in and take...

It's hard to have a serious discussion with those Brits!

    Antique power tools

There was a wire nut in there? There probably shouldn't be, usually the cord goes directly to the switch or a terminal with a screw. The hard part of putting a newer cord on some old drills is in where it goes into the handle. You usually need some sort of grommet or something to tighten it so...

    compressor discharge line question

Another reason for the coil is to take up vibration so the line don't crack at the flare. Jim S.

has anyone painted their black pipe?

Years ago, all the pipes in a machine shop were supposed to be painted different colors, water one color, air another, gas another, etc. I sure don't remember what colors were what. The candy cane look would be good, make sure you get the stripes nice and even though.

how to keep dust down in the garage

Well, naturally it depends on what the dust is coming from. If you're not making sawdust or something and it just keeps getting dusty it's from the unsealed floor like Steevo said. That dust is powdered concrete - probably not good for nice paint jobs or machinery like lathes.

What's the temperature in your 'GARAGE' ?

Re: What's the temperture in your 'GARAGE' ? I have in-floor heating set at 64 here in Wisconsin. With that type of system you have to pretty much leave the setting the same day and night. Any change you make takes a long time to take effect. I suppose I could save some money by setting it down...

    Beer & Garage

Hamar - can you say that fast after 6 - 8 beers? I like Point Special - available here in Wisconsin. Newcastle Brown Ale is really good, but too expensive for guzzling. I don't have a fridge in the garage, but maybe next summer I'll have to get one. Jim S.

    Ceiling fan direction

It always seemed to me it wouldn't make a lot of difference which way it went. The air circulates down in the middle and up at the walls, or up in the middle and down at the walls. Either way it takes the warm air at the ceiling and moves it back to the floor.

12 VOLT in your Garage/Shop Electrical Circut

They take ac and turn it into dc by using a diode - a one-way "check valve". It's called rectification. Just using one diode makes a half wave rectifier, sort of crude and choppy but it works. Using 4 in a bridge circuit with a capacitor makes nice clean dc. A battery give you completly clean...

    Anti Fatigue floor mat?

When I first started working in a machine shop in the '60s they had "duck boards" to stand on. They were hardwood strips maybe 3/4 by 3/4 nailed or screwed to runners. The runners were far enough apart the the strips had a little give or bounce to them. At the end of the day you would pick them...

Do you really use your primary work bench as a work station?

I think it's a mistake to put the tool boxes on the bench - it ends up taking up too much room and if you try to work in front of it you can't get the drawers open. A big vice is necessary, but having a grinder on it is probably not a good idea. I have the grinder on mine and it makes a big...
