    Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT Breaking out of my self-imposed prison

My wife and have been on a clean out campaign both in the house and the garage over the past few months. We are far from hoarders, but after almost 30 years in our home we have accumulated a lot of "stuff". It is amazing what you find at the back of cabinets and closets that hasn't seen the...

    Attached garage fire, ugh

Unless the wind blows them up against the structure, rolling them up as they travel across the ground. I just throw all my solvent soaked rags into a no. 10 can covered with poultry cloth and set them on fire. Once the fire is out I stir up the ashes and I know things are safe.

What type of shop do you have?

A too small shop and too big projects.

OSB for interior walls - prime/paint before hanging? etc

It's easy enough to roll paint onto walls. What do you gain by painting before hanging it other than the fastener heads being unpainted? I would think that managing multiple sheets while painting one side would be a nuisance as well as an opportunity for the OSB to warp and make hanging it...

    Adding Plumbing to Existing Building

I would hammer out a bit of concrete and run the lines in and out of the building underground. At the end of the day this would be the cleanest looking, and that would be important to both me and my wife.

Above 1200 Sq/FT Planning a detached 6-car garage from scratch — here's what 2.5 months of design actually looks like

Help with drawings and calculations are fine, but that help must be under the supervision (responsible charge) of the PE. I have PE stamped drawings for refinery units with a team of over a dozen engineers and designers working under my supervision. You usually must work for 4 years under the...

how to use a thread file

The biggest mistake using thread files is rushing the job because you are pissed that the thread is damaged in the first place. Taking my time and working slowly seems to be key for me to get the best results. Don't try to fix bad threads quickly with aggressive cuts as that is a sure fire way...

Teaching a New Welder - What Do You Wish You Had Been Shown?

The most helpful thing to me was learning how to adjust the machine and seeing how changing an input changes the weld. Select random setting: run a bead, change amperage, run another, change again, run another, etc. until you have figured out the " best" amperage. Now increase it decrease the...

    What's the minimum stud spacing for a 12 x 12 storage shed?

I spent a lot of time in "temporary" WW2 era buildings built with studs on 48" centers in the 1990's. Edit to add: After some research to confirm my memories I found that some buildings built to theater of operations standards were constructed with 2x6 studs on 8 foot centers. 😮

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

So far I'm striking out on shooting the topcoat on my truck outdoors, as there is no clearance to get to the roof inside. Strike 1. It is 91% humidity and water keeps condensing on the truck despite tarping it overnight. Strike 2. The paint prep spray takes off the single stage I'm painting...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Salvage Garage

Are the boxes you have grandfathered? If they are, I would definitely not swap them for trailers. Trailers, being up off the ground will be pain in the *** to access, especially as you get older.

What Tool Is The Bane of your existence? I'll go 1st

I use a 3 or 4 inch wide strip of Saran Wrap. Saran Wrap, unlike cheaper generic cling wraps is not oxygen permeable. Wrap about half around the caulk nozzle, fold it over and wrap the remainder. Tape in place with electrical tape. I have stored partial tubes of caulk like this for a year...

    welding pinholes in sheetmetal,TIG?

I cleaned a rusty part with Evaporust and it damn near evaporated. 😂 Edit: This is not a dig at Evaporust, which is a great product. The part was mostly rust with only a spider web of steel left holding it together.

    ZMotorsports Shop Projects 2.0

This is probably my favorite thread. You were definitely blessed by God with skills and talent and you multiply that blessing by sharing it with us here on Garage Journal. I read this thread both because it is interesting, and because I can learn things. I'll never own a large RV like yours...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

A good match in front. ...but not so good in back. I guess I'll have wait until after clear coat to know for sure, but for a truck that is not my daily driver I'm calling it good enough. Edit to add: The rear driver's side door was another Facebook Marketplace replacement after the same...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Technically outside my garage... I prefer to paint inside, but the ceiling is too low for painting the roof of the Ram 3500, so I painted early this morning before the wind picked up. The clear coat and paint on the roof and hood was badly broken down, so I sanded it all out and shot 2 coats...

    Car condo owners, in here

The one nearest me is sold out. Sadly it is a good 45 minutes away. If it had been closer I would have bought a unit.
