    Looks amazing. Did you paint over the letters and then sand them off? What did you apply to them and the other bare metal to protect it (if anything)?

    I was thinking if I leave the retainer on, then I wouldn't be able to spray since it would get on the spindle and it seems like the spindle isn't usually painted in vise restorations? But maybe I'm wrong. What do you do?

    Thanks so much all! Shiftless, I'm starting from square one with this - the Simple Green tip is a great help. I will do that, and then put the whole thing in Evaporust. Do you then paint the whole thing with a paint brush? If you have a guide for restoring a vise please share!

    It's just one I found on google! Not mine. The spindle has a notch that this sets into. Here's a pic I just grabbed. It's loose around the spindle, I just can't unscrew it because of this notch holding it in place. It's pretty tight too. Needle nose pliers cant really get in there and when I...

    I need to remove this to get the spindle out. This was asked here and the two answers were 1. slide it off (I tried, I don't think this is possible by design) 2. break it. I really don't want to break it. But if I have to, does anyone know how I would replace it once everything is cleaned up...
