    Rip wood strips to fit ridges or you can use angle/flat bar which is stronger than foam and will keep stuff from slipping through.

    Wire brush 'em clean, Rustoleum primer + light enamel would be perfect combo. Stick with white / tan so they do not heat up and paint on mild day

    You should to at least trap it - even for light us. Without trapping it, gases and critters could come right back up the line and the smell will make you regret not doing it. A simple P-trap under the sink is good insurance. And for venting, it isn't critical for light gray water usage...
