Building a Garage Into a Hillside

Good point. I should also note that the dirt work will be performed at least a year ahead of any footers being dug, or any other necessary subsequent work. So I'm likely looking at have a skid steer touch up any run-off or fall-in of dirt from the weather.

Building a Garage Into a Hillside

Getting ready to have some dozier work done on my property in preparation for a 40x60 garage. I wanted to get your opinion of building a garage into a hillside, below grade of the high side. I will be demo'ing an old unfinished house foundation that was intended to have a basement. So my plan...

Question on running well water to detached garage

Thanks for the info so far, guys. For what it's worth, here's a crude sketch of what I'm dealing with:

Question on running well water to detached garage

My pressure tank is in the crawl space under my house. Unfortunate in this case, but I don't have to worry about it freezing.

Question on running well water to detached garage

In preparation for dirt work for a future garage, I need to move my water line. Fortunately, the line will now be a straight shot from my well to the house (it currently zig zags, as there was once a trailer in front of where my house currently sits). The well is right behind where the garage...

What's your essential home oil change equipment?

For those of you who, like me, change oil in a gravel driveway, buy a furniture moving blanket from Northern Tool or Harbor Freight. Best $6 I've spent. They're much easier on the back and back of your head when a creeper isn't practical.

The straw that broke the camel's back tool shelf collapse.

Nice collection! That particular style of shelving is intended to have rear and side sway braces. It's not technically supposed to be accessible from both sides. As long as the shelf or unit capacity isn't exceeded, lateral stability shouldn't be an issue. I would add sway braces or switch to...

    Edsal steel top question

Steel tops are supposed to have reinforcement channels installed in the void. Tennsco steel tops ship with 4 included: http://www.tennsco.com/Product/steel-top-t-3072 Not sure about Edsal.

    Favorite storage locker

I would check out industrial grade cabinets not found at retail, but via Grainger, McMaster, et al. Tennsco is my brand of choice for steel storage cabinets.

Refused freight delivery - Now what?

Good thing you refused the shipment. Standard procedure now is 5 days to file concealed damage claims. A lot of folks won't inspect at the time of delivery. At my company, we file a damage claim with carrier (after requesting pictures from customer) and send out a replacement ASAP. We then...

what tools can't you imagine yourself without?

Smart phone is a good one. Two things I always find myself reaching for are my inspection mirror and telescoping magnet. I can see things from above that would otherwise require crawling under a vehicle, and pick up small items (that contain carbon) with ease.

    Edsal Storage Cabinets

You can purchase standard shelves for most cabinets to replace the combination kit for general storage. The partition is intended for clothing storage. Edsal cabinets typically require clips to support the shelves, so be careful not to lose any.

    Edsal Storage Cabinets

I'm partial to this brand, but I understand if you can score used units.

What was file cabinet intended for?

Well it's similar to a flat file intended for blueprints, but obviously not wide enough. I would assume it was intended for paper/document storage, with the media laying flat. Definitely a specialty cabinet. Nice score, and interesting to me as I'm in the metal storage product industry.

Anyone have any ideas on keeping CARPENTER BEE's away???

I just bought a mason jar bee trap at a local Mennonite store Friday evening. I mounted it under the awning of my storage building and caught 5 yesterday.

How to hang a big *** metal cabinet on to a wall?

If you can, it wouldn't hurt to use a piece of lumber inside the cabinet to sandwich the back panel (perhaps 1x4 at the top). Depending on the fasteners used, you wouldn't want the screw heads pulling through the back of the cabinet when loaded to capacity. The cabinets that my place of...

Salt kills weeds better than Round-up (any downside???)

I've tried a salt/vinegar/dish soap/water solution that I read about, and it killed the weeds in my driveway very quickly. However, they were quick to grow back. I now use a super concentrated herbicide purchased from the local co-op that takes about 2 weeks to kill, but lasts a lot longer...

shelf spacing, organization for small storage space

Fire codes typically dictate no less than 36" aisles. Mobilizing your shelving is a good idea, but do it safely. Store heavier items on the bottom shelves and don't exceed the caster's weight capacity. Unless you encounter a score like the previous poster, a mobile carriage system will not be...
