Tool chest review - Sears, Tractor Supply, Lowes, Home Depot, Harbor Freight

Based upon what I am reading, I think I found the best deal yet on tool boxes. About two months ago the local HF was having a sidewalk sale on various items including tool boxes. They had three 44" bottom boxes on sale for $299 each. The saleslady said they were floor samples and the manager...

    Property Tax Complaint

WOW! You guys really pay some high property taxes. Before I complained about taxes on my 20 x 30 garage, I went on line to see what others in my area of town were paying on property like mine with a garage addition. I decided to not complain. They will compare you to other property in the area...

Cheap but cool building methods in Texas?

I am sure you will have a lot of opinions about this. I have a 30 x 40 all metal garage in West Texas. The walls and ceiling are insulated with 3 inch insulation with the white vinyl facing the inside. The garage is bright inside with overhead lights. I open the north and south facing overhead...

Butcher Block/Bench Top where to source??

You may be missing out on a source for items like a butcher block top work bench. About twice a year our school district sells surplus items at an auction held at the district's warehouse/storage facility. Items sold cheap include school lockers, large tables and desks, and numerous kitchen...

    Lift Repair---HELP

Thanks for the responses. My Challenger lift is an old chain driven 27000 model 9,000lb capacity). The carriges are huge and heavy. It was a major job just installing the top connecting piece as I had to notch the roof supports to fit it into place. I am not looking forward to taking it all...

    Lift Repair---HELP

I have an older Challenger 2-post lift. Last week one of the plastic sliders fell out of the carriage inside the guide/support post. Each carriage has 8 sliders to prevent metal to metal contact with the guide inside the support post. After doing some research on this, I learned it is...

Falcon's next shop - build thread

The shop looks great. You have a lot of good ideas. And speaking of racing, we missed you Saturday night at TXR. Sambo, Robert, and I were all there. I bet you could have done well.

    Inspections and Permits Questions

This is a very interesting line of questions. When I built my non-attached garage, I installed a separate electric service meter just for the garage to avoid questions about the service to my house. The electrical contractor was concerned that connecting into my existing house service would...

    Swinging Gate Wheel Problem

Outlawmws is correct. I have a much heavier gate with two fixed wheels that roll across a concrete driveway. I cannot imagine how it would work without fixed wheel(s). A larger wheel would also help.

    POS Harbor fright tools

The air hose fittings must be designed to leak. The air compressor filter/regulator assembly (blue) must also be designed to leak. The orange electric grinder mentioned by several others refuses to not work. I have overheated it; dropped it; and used it for several years with no problems. It is...

    Roof or gutters 1st?

For us rain is an exciting event. If you have gutters, you can't see the water run off the roof. If you had gutters, you would just have to spend time cleaning out the dirt (dust) that collects in the low spots. I just wish we could get some of that Florida rain---just a little!

    Roof or gutters 1st?

Around here we just do roofs with no gutters. It doesn't rain enough to fool with gutters. If I lived where it rained some, I would do the roof first so the gutters would not get bent or damaged while the roof was being installed.

    Asphalt driveways - MN

I have had both concrete and asphalt. The concrete is good for a long, long time. The ashpalt not so long. I think you will find little difference in the price. And you can work on the concrete without worrying about spilling something on it that will ruin it.

Cost per Ft to Build a nice garage

I'm with Falcon67. My 30x40 ran just over $16.00 per foot five years ago. The big expense was the concrete. I did most of the work myself. The city permits were several hundred dollars as I remember it. I don't know how you afford to build anything in some states.

what to do with your tools after...

The comments about what happens to your tools when you are gone are really thought provoking. I feel so lucky that my son shares my interest in tools and mechanics. I also have a daughter that can do repairs around her home and can make simple car repairs when necessary. We have even discussed...

    Mechanics Shop Towels

I see Falcon67 caught onto my source of rags. I wondered why the price keeps going up everytime I go to get more. At one time they were $5.00 for 15 lbs. The blue rags are the best!

    Mechanics Shop Towels

Find out who does the laundry for the local hospital. They can only use the blue/white towels one time. They laundry them to where they look like new and sell them by the pound cheap. I think they are slightly larger than the red towels. They have no odor. At least give it a try.

    Parts Washer fluid?

I have the same exact washer. I have always used napatha because it is cheap; does not have a strong odor; and leaves no oily residue. I cannot stand the smell of diesel that seems to linger forever.

What Kind of Car Lifts does everyone use in their shop?

Challenger 2-post rated for 9,000 lbs. It was cheap ($500), old, and used; but it has never given any problems.

    parts washer fluid

What an interesting question with interesting responses. I have used napatha for at least 40 years before the pump driven washers became popular. I find it to be cheap (about $6.00 per gallon), and it does not have a strong odor. In the old days it was used by dry cleaners. I still use it in my...
