    Saylor-Beall Rebuild

Which reminds me of a joke. 2 guys (a contractor and a mathematician )were sitting in a bar pounding a few cold ones and 2 unbelievably hot mommas come in and sat down at the far end of the bar. the guys, wishing they had the nerve to go over and hit them up start hatching a plan. The...

jdcompman, I like that blue color can you specify brand and color code? thanks jon, on the tank- I usually apply the bondo to the bare metal after sanding with 80 grit for good adhesion. Leave the bondo a little high and get it flush(even) with 180 or 220 grit to get rid of the sand scratches...

    Saylor-Beall Rebuild

OK, it is what I remembered. Sand the bad spots with 180 or 220 paper feathering into the good paint. prime those spots. I try not to lay the primer too thick. 1/8 th inch is fine. Once primed take the tank outside and get a garden hose to have a small stream of water running. Sand the tank with...

Jon, once the primer is on the pump, scuff with the green scratch pad someone suggested then tack off and get some paint on it. You will be able to sand smooth anything not to your liking. When the paint guy comes to do the tank he will show you a lot as far as prep etc. If you think this paint...

    Saylor-Beall Rebuild

Re: Should I buy this Saylor-Beall? Just don't do what I did. A neighbor used my "community air tank" one day and left the air chuck on top of a outside barrel still hooked up. it fell onto the cement, kicked the air chuck out and the fitting stayed wide open the hose whooshed back and forth...

    Saylor-Beall Rebuild

Jon, it's been 25 years so the new products I am unfamiliar with. I always have some sort of primer over bare metal. Anything metal should be totally free of any oil or contaminants. I usually use a lacquer thinner or acrylic enamel reducer applied to a lint free rag(cotton) to wipe down bare...

    Saylor-Beall Rebuild

The 3hp motor had a clockwise rotation. Had to switch #5 and #8 wire to make it run ccw. Had to borrow the wifes magnifying glass for that. hope she doesn't miss it. She is always misplacing things... Not quite, the valve body holds a dime sized disc of stainless steel, a spring and a disc...

    Saylor-Beall Rebuild

Jon, I too almost messed up with the extra rings. I must of read the ring instructions 5 times until I figured it out. My quincy 308 had a big and small ring for 2 of the slots, 1 regular ring and the oil 3 part scraper. On the double rings the thinner one had to go on top or bottom of the...

    Vintage Air Compressors

My Quincy 308-18 rebuild is coming along well. Does anyone know how much play there should be in the crankshaft(how tight)? I just used enough shims in the back to create some drag then removed the thinnest one and it spins pretty good. I have lots of pictures put haven't figured out why they...

Ken, thanks for the help. Pulled the flywheel today. No apparent groove in the c-shaft. No oil seal( I haven't had time to take a look at what you e-mailed me today. will do that after typing this). Valves, after a good soak came apart just like you said they would. A lot more cleaning and I'll...

Ken, what do you mean by "a beached tank"? I had planned to set the upper tank to the larger tank with the feet on the upper bolted to the platform of the lower. Took it (308) apart and the main roller bearings seem all right, rod pins are fine only concern is the machined part on the crank...

    Saylor-Beall Rebuild

thanks for your response. I haven't pulled the crank out yet but did notice some oil leakage there so you are probably right. I better take it to a machine shop to be sure. this is my first rebuild and I want to do it right. hopefully it will come out 1/2 as good as yours.

    Saylor-Beall Rebuild

hi, great site. rebuilding a quincy 308 and wonder if the flywheel 1/8 inch wobble is too much and if you guys think I should get a new crankshaft. also am planning on mounting a 40 gal tank/compressor pump and motor on an 80 gal tank. bad idea? parts source? ideas? thanks

    Vintage Air Compressors

Hi, great forum. I just finished cleaning out an old pole shed and received an old compressor for payment. It (i believe) is a Quincy two stage model 308-18. The tank is 40 gal. The pistons were seized and I freed them up with some PB blast. I have decided to rebuild it but noticed today the...
