Reviving this thread as my garage and basement slabs will be poured soon. Where can I buy the concrete dobies (that seem to be the preferred support)? Links would be appreciated. Also, my slab will be ~4” thick, so a 1-1/2 to 2” dobie should be sufficient? Thanks!

Great idea and post! I am going to build a wooden swinging gate as you suggest and add one extra feature: a detachable lower panel. This won't be an often used gate, so if and when I need to open it AND there's snow on the ground, I'll remove the lower panel.

@LLWillysfan: how well does that sliding "barn" door seal out the exterior air? I'm interested in doing something similar but am hesitant due to the cold winters (that you get as well).
