    Calipers Shopping

I work in the aerospace field and we generally stick to Starrett or Mitutoyo (dial and digital). You can't really go wrong with either brand, so I'd say hunt around for a deal and get whatever is cheapest... I picked up a brand new Mitutoyo 6" digital caliper years ago off eBay for about $75 and...

I'm looking to build a small tool kit to put in my Tacoma and need some suggestions from fellow GJ'ers. Here's what I have so far, all of which fits in to a 12" tool bag with room to spare... - 1/2" drive breaker bar, extension and 21mm 6pt deep socket for lug nuts - 3/8" drive ratchet...

I picked up a set of the 1/2" drive deep's in both SAE and metric the other day... filled my Hansen trays nicely, but I'm still missing the ones listed. Thanks for the heads up, though!

    The Harbor Freight PASS/FAIL Thread...

Bought the 24" Bolt Cutters P/N 41149 for $12.99 on sale and just used them to cut some 1/4" wire rope... worked like a champ! PASS!

    The Harbor Freight PASS/FAIL Thread...

We harvested the motors and batteries out of a couple of these cordless screwdrivers for a robotics class in college... I don't know about longevity, but they were quite torquey and quick to charge!

    Imperial 370-FH tube bender

It will be Al 6061-T6... readily available and fairly cheap. What lube do you recommend? Would grease work?

    CJ5 swing out tire carrier

How did you tie the bumper into the frame? Did you just weld/bolt the bumper to the rear cross member, or did you tie into the frame rails? Most of the damage I've seen with tire carriers bending the frame are from loading it down too much (big tires and/or cargo) and only mounting to the cross...

    Imperial 370-FH tube bender

Those Swagelok's look nice, but at $200 a pop for a single size, they are a little out of my price range. The Imperial can be had for $50 and is the only multi-size tool that can handle 1/2".

    Imperial 370-FH tube bender

Anyone ever use one? I'm thinking about getting one to bend some 1/2", 0.0625" wall, aluminum round tubing but was wondering how well it would work with such thick tube.

Is there a formula to narrow a rear end?

If you're doing a substantial amount of welding to the housing, you should also take into account warping. Check out this thread for details.

    CJ5 swing out tire carrier

Lookin' good! I'm digging the simplicity of the Gerry can retainer... those big knobs are a great idea, but I wonder if they'll vibrate off? What hinge did you use for the tire carrier and did you tie the bumper in to the frame?
