There is also thin composite decking material boards for covering beams that could be used. I want to say the thickness is around 1/4"

I think it would be easier resawing that on a table saw if you have one. You would have to flip it over side for side to make the 4 5/8 width.

Pretty clever design, any idea how those wedge shaped slats are attached in the chair you saw at the hospital? The one on the website looks like it has a thin layer of wood under the slats but not the one at the hospital. :headscrat
