Gertsner wood machinist box restoration. 1st wood box restoration. any advice or tips

Hi Adam, your comment and Carla's about the drawer joints caught my eye. I looked it up in Tage Frid's Joinery book. He calls it a "Half-Blind Tongue and Rabbit" and also warns about its weakness. It is obsolete, but I guess that's the best locking half-blind joint they could make with only a...

Gertsner wood machinist box restoration. 1st wood box restoration. any advice or tips

Thanks everyone, this has been a really interesting thread. I bought a Gerstner top and middle box from my wife's retired machinist Grandfather to save it from ebay, and have had it in storage for most of 10 years. This thread has inspired me to clean it, reattach the loose felt, and find a...

    Two GFIs on One Circuit

I wired my kitchen countertops like that, 4 independent GFCI receptacles on 2 different circuits, so any one can trip without affecting the others and you don't need to know how the kitchen is wired to reset them. They were only about $12/each and have indicator lights so you can tell that the...

    Adding grounds to older house

My FIL suggested adding bare grounds when I bought my house and I believe it is allowed, but I ignored him and am replacing circuits with new romex as suggested above. FYI: https://www.inkling.com/read/nfpa-national-electrical-code-handbook-2011/chapter-2/vii--methods-of-equipment "Exception...

15mm box end wrench size comparo-gearwrench,sk spline, williams, napa pro

You know, I bought a set of GW ratcheting wrenches last year and they had put the 11mm insert in the 10mm wrench. Try measuring it, maybe yours is the wrong size too. Edit: on second reading, maybe you are talking about the wrench being bulky. Can't help there.

Yet another sign the apocalypse is upon us.

In my town, the people holding garage sales are crazy hoarders that haul out the same junk every weekend. If they ever had anything good, it is long gone. Plus as others mentioned, no one except retired guys have the time to drive around. If you have good stuff, try posting a detailed ad on...

Bora Squares Killer Deal on Woot!

I ended up ordering the Swanson 8in and it came today. I like it very much. It is not etched. I believe the blade is a silk-screened enamel and the body is a silk-screened ink. It had the terrible label that the reviews warned about. It took some doing, but soapy water, peanut butter, and...

Bora Squares Killer Deal on Woot!

After watching the multi-angle video, I thought "meh, I'll just stick with my speed square" but then I looked down the page and see that Swanson makes one of these too so maybe they fill a need. Hmm. Blade looks identical to the Bora, $11 for the 8-inch...

How to get USA Craftsman tamper proof torx bit?

I recommend this Dewalt set ($8 at HD). http://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-Torx-Bit-Set-7-Piece-DW2067SCR/202504238 The description doesn't say, but they are security bits. They also have a good Urrea bit adapter (free shipping to store)...

Those are called SDS hammer drills, which refers to the shank that supports both chisels and drill bits.

    6Pt Combo Wrenches

I also use the CM RP USA 6 pts, mainly on my motorcycle: lots of small fasteners made of oatmeal, corrosion, can't get at them with a socket. I like them and I think $15 is great.

Screwdriver vs. screw bits. Are premium screwdriver sets worth it?

The T-handle is nice when you have room because you can torque and apply downward force at the same time. It's a little hard to apply downward force with the mini ratchet, I usually press with one hand and torque with other. I hope you like them.

Screwdriver vs. screw bits. Are premium screwdriver sets worth it?

I'm kind of a fan of bits. As mentioned above, hex/torx are a necessity for automotive work and you can pick up high quality bit sets for cheap. Here are some "needs" that I would put before fancy screwdrivers. (1) I use the Felo T-Handle so often that it is a need...

best bang for the buck wrench set

You nailed it. I have a set of their wrenches (SUN9917M, China) and they are a big step down in quality from their impact sockets (Taiwan). I think HF is about right, quality-wise. As an example, my set has several pairs of wrenches that are physically identical except for the openings. So at...

    Recommend Me a Screwdriver Set

I picked up a JIS set after stripping some soft screws on my Japanese motorcycle. Since then, I have come to prefer the JIS drivers for Phillips screws. They grip better and don't cam out. The easiest set to find online is made by Hozan: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A7WAHTU/?tag=atomicindus08-20
