Yes, bluing will rust unless kept well oiled. Parkerizing/phosphatizing is better for corrosion protection.

I today received some Rustoleum Hard Hat RAL# -colored blue paint for my Records. I will try if it works with Eastwoods Rust encapsulator as (red) primer. If its too dark another option is self etching primer which I have in light gray. I also received my latest small vise and I think my first...

Thanks. Yes, it seems to be in very nice condition. Jaws are good, very little hammer marks on the vise itself but the handle has some, quick action works. Needs indeed a good clean and a rust removal bath. Then I am thinking oil or satin black maybe.

    Spark plug socket opinions

There is couple of options in fleabay too, the SLP 30102 which seems to be made out of old Craftsman sockets and then there is somebody who seems to make them by himself out of old sockets. Both these options seem a bit longer than the SO version though. No affiliation with either product or...

Any friendly vise/vice guy in UK who would be willing to help me out buying a small vice from UK? The seller is not willing to post it abroads due some past bad experience but will post it postage free inside UK. Its a small 6lbs vice with 2.25" jaws which would be perfect to my small...

Swivels in general seem quite rare here in Europe - or atleast in parts where I have lived or bough vises from. At the moment I don't remember any of my friends using one and even in pro shops they are not common at all. I don't know if they never picked up because of the war or maybe early ones...

I am sure patents were used and paid for also when patents were still in effect. Patents were enforced and those abusing them were quickly sued even back in 1800's.

Yes, your are right, I found the model J in 1964 B&H catalogue too. In 1971 catalogue there is only Records and Fortis'. But, that is just one distributor, probably doesn't tell the final truth about if they were made or not.

Hi! Cool. Just last week I bought a Samsonia 37 Perfect Vise Model J. Its a fixed base and QR mechanism intact. Should have it in hand this week maybe. Another coincidence: I also bought a Record 00 this weekend. :) The oldest catalogue I've seen the lineup of model J's in is from...

Anybody know what blue this color is oldldh used few years ago? https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6837416&postcount=60016 I like it. Looks a lot like modern Hazet blue and IMO much nicer than the modern or even old Record blue.

Here is a one more of mine I plan to freshen up a bit. Its a old German Triumph-85. The jaws are 85mm (about 3.35") and it weights 8.5kg (about 19lbs). As some might remember from other Triumph-vises shown here earlier interesting thing about this design is that the rear jaw is the one that...

Hi, thanks. I was looking at those same jaws. Price is good, they seem to go for 50€/$55 a pair + shipping in Europe. :wtf: Don't know yet if they ship abroads though. Amazon has them too and they are about 30€ shipped so that is an option. Yes, I'll usually stay away from the Irwin stuff ;)...

Found a promising and cheap Record No.5 Mechanics' vise today from flea market today. 5" jaws, 52lbs/23.5kg. Its missing a jaw, somebody snapped a jaw screw and didn't bother to dig the stub out. The loose jaw didn't come with the vise so, I need to find a replacement pair from somewhere. Jaws...

    Rust when draining air compressor?

I try to remember to drain my compressors after every use to minimize condensation inside the tank. My little one, I use for nailers and tyre pressure, also used to spit out rusty water on my hand when opening the drain. Got annoyed with it and sprayed linseed oil (rust preventive coating which...
