    Question for Insulation Experts

I framed in a back porch. It has been sheathed, house wrapped, and vinyl sided. The walls are 2X4 studs and I'm going to insulate them using Roxul comfort batt mineral wool insulation. The batts are unfaced, should I use a vapor barrier with this type of insulation? I've heard that I should not.

    Finish nailers

Thanks Seth, that's the information I was looking for. I've been looking at the smart point nailers. I agree with looking at the nails first. I thought about pre-drilling and hand nailing, and using a nail set. But as careful as I am I always leave a few hammer marks somewhere.

    Finish nailers

The T&G planking I'm installing is 3/4 inch thick. The trim will also be 3/4 inch thick. This for a rustic interior of a room I'm remodeling for a craft and hobby room. I'm using cedar car siding and installing it vertically. I'll need nails that can be used with cedar.

    Finish nailers

I want to put up tongue and groove paneling and then some window trim. Which finish nailer would be the better choice, an angled or straight nailer?

If they are rafters instead of trusses you could also have some sagging rafters.

IF they used plywood for the roof deck did they put in the plywood clips between the rafters?

Soffit and Facia - What's the best?

In the next few weeks I'll have aluminum fascia and vinyl soffits installed on my house. I have a ridge vent and the soffits are now going to be vented so I blocked off the gable vents. This is the best solution for me. Clean look and low maintenance. My wife always wants to paint in late...

    Getting Window Estimates

The Andersen 100 Series now offers a pre-cut field installable trim kit for the windows. I have three 100 series casement windows with trim kits on order. They are quite large. I'll hire an installer to put them in. My short list is two contractors. I know their work.

    Framing for a PTAC

Yes, it would be a heat pump type. The room is only for occasional use. The PTAC would be under a window. I wanted to put it a few inches above the floor. I would put the bottom of the sleeve on the floor but it needs to be slightly tilted towards the outside.

    Framing for a PTAC

I have a 12 X 14 room that I want to heat and cool, a slab floor, typical 4 inch insulated wall and windows on 3 sides. The local hvac salesmen are pushing a mini-split but I think a 7000 BTU PTAC is more suited. I know I have to frame in for a sleeve, but what would be a recommended height...

    Best Storm Door Brand?

Don't count on it. I have Pella. They make a good product but support and service *****. I've never had a more miserable experience than dealing with Pella. I'll never buy another one of their products again. It's just not worth the trouble.

    Best Storm Door Brand?

Larson makes the storm doors for Pella but they are made to fit a Pella door jamb.

    Best Storm Door Brand?

Larson makes most of the storm doors in the country. They make them for most door companies. Provia makes high end doors but you will pay for the quality. I just had my entry doors replaced. There are no drafts but I like using storm doors to protect the door finish.

    Green Hinge System

I'm replacing the trim around my garage door. I'm thinking of ordering the Green Hinges. For those of you that have used them how well do they work for you? Have they made enough of a difference that you would recommend them? What do you like or dislike about them?

    Tooling Caulk

After reading the post about caulk I came up with a question about tooling it. The caulk I've always used I've taped off and used my finger dipped in dish soap to smooth it out and remove the excess. If I use a polyurethane caulk should I use mineral spirits instead of dish soap for a nice...

    Why no rockwool insulation?

I find building science a fascinating subject. New materials and methods are developed to address old problems. I especially like seeing the methods used in other parts of the world.

    Why no rockwool insulation?

I'm prepping an exterior wall for window and door replacement. I pulled off the rotted wood siding and the old celotex sheathing. Guess what, no insulation. I'm using Roxul and installing it from the outside and then sheathing over it.I love the stuff. It has a gentle learning curve. The videos...
