winter heat calcium chloride pellets from HD work good for me. I will say I think it tracks in worse than regular salt, but it may be due to how white it is, that its just more visible.

While you sound very passionate, you do not know about proper venting of appliances. High efficiency appliances have been using pvc for venting for years. (furnaces/water heaters, etc) The failure is improper installation and not the materials used.

The less things that are in there to absorb the sound, it will sound like a tin can. The tin cannot absorb sound very well so it echoes pretty bad. It will be better if the shops not "empty" all the time.

I like Vipers idea of steel downstairs and drywall upstairs. With the roof lines of the upstairs I think drywall would be the best. If you did steel on the ceiling, I wouldn't do the entire wall in steel. If you do this and ever run an impact or loud tools it will echo like being in a tin can. A...
