    LiFePO4 batteries explosion risk mitigation

I have been in the EV world for approaching 20 years now. Packs don't run away, cells do. Everything that happens in a battery happens at the cell level. With certain chemistries a cell running away can create an incident that is spectacular. That being said LiFePO4 are considered inherently...

Are the cheaper benchtop "precision" lathes worth it to have around for projects?

It has been said before, but yes so long as you temper your expectations. A benchtop lathe is not going to hog out a big 12 in piece of steel, even though you might possibly find some way to mount it. I had an only Craftsman lathe that I pickup up. It became one of my most used tools in the...

Wright Tools Disappointment (Transforms to Respect)

The didn't have good life expectancy. They also affected the communities around them with extremely high cancer rates. Hence why the worst offenders are no longer available in the US. As long as it is in someone elses neighborhood, folks can complain their chrome isn't as good as the old...

    Collecting tools?

People collect much dumber things, McDonalds' soda glasses, Hardee's raison figurines, beanie babbies all come to my mind. To each their own.

Rustoleum Farm and Implement Paint + Hardener Question

Can't speak for rustoleum perse, but I did my 4runner in tractor supply implement paint with the hardener. No problem with small spill at the gas station for the five years I owned it.

FIRE! What was supposed to protect me from this?

I am many many years dated on my civilian fire service, but if power could not be secured it was make sure the people are out, set a perimeter, and contain. For residential pulling the meter was step one. Pretty sure that is forbidden these days, but I worked with people who though SCBAs were...

    Case hardening process

Proccess seems right but one important step, choose the right material. Not all steels harden equally. If it doesn't have enough carbon it is not going to harden. For the tempering, I would just turn off the oven and leave overnight or until it is cool.

    Aluminum 3D printing

If you want to be cagey so be it. Lots of experience here, but without info there is a limit to how much people can help. A run of 10 is extremely different from a run of 10,000. A part requireing tolarances of +- 1 cm is very different from a part requireing +0 -.001mm. Your relatively safe...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Salvage Garage

Fair, but if you add to many forklifts aren’t you afraid the continent is going to flip over. Weight an balance is important after all.

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Salvage Garage

You do have the coolest toys, but I have to ask. Now being 7-8-9 what ever forklifts deep, with the purchase price plus the time, fuel, tolls, etc to acquire them, wouldn't it be better to buy one brand new functional forklifts, instead of 9 sort of maybe forklifts?

hex crimpers for battery lugs / terminals - recommendations?

Th dies are market wrong, but honestly the HF crumpets are pretty good. I have mad dozens of EVs using them.

Lighted TEXACO letters - how would you do it?

The tingle is entirely normal, especially in the tube. As long as it doesn’t cross into shocking you good to go. LED and neon can coexist. In some cases the electric field from the neon is strong enough to induce current in the LEDs and makes them glow. Not an issue just weird and can mess...

Lighted TEXACO letters - how would you do it?

The transformer says it is 130 VA at 120V. That works to about 1.1 amps per letter. Assuming they are all the same, that you should be able to easily run all of them on one circuit.

Lighted TEXACO letters - how would you do it?

your Klien should be fine. 600v is the working voltage. You are concerned with low current transients. If you have a dead short and go 4k to ground the breaker should have poped. To ground you are going to see voltage but you want to see less then 60 or so volts. If you see 500 it is time...

Lighted TEXACO letters - how would you do it?

Each light looks like it has its own transformer, so you just need 120 to the transformer. It cost you nothing to see if they work. Watch your fingers and have a good multimeter standing by. The insulation in the old transformers can break down an allow it to escape. Everything should be...

Lighted TEXACO letters - how would you do it?

I'm in the LED crowd. Five years ago I would say it would be a cheap and easy project. Now it is going to be moderately expensive, but still simple project. Do the letters have backs? If not you really want to make some. Preferably shiny. Even white cardboard will help get a good uniform...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Salvage Garage

LinuxCNC with Mesa cards is how I would go. You would be able to retain all of the current functionality and even add new functionallity. The problem is there is no free lunch. Masso makes things simple but limits you. LinuxCNC can do almost anything, but has a steep learning curve. For a...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Salvage Garage

That is a hell of a machine. While the bead slinger takes up more floor space, it is much faster and more rigid than moving the head. Retrofitting it with a Masso is going to be a chore though. They make good stuff, but they don't give you a ton of flexibility. That is fine and even...
