No skills to repair centrifugal motor start switch

WALTA. I used an ABB plug in relay , this was 1998. Any good industrial timer drop out that can be set at 0,5 sec and switch an inductive AC load of 5 A will be good. Sorry, have NO knowledge of available relays in the US. If Allen Bradley still exists, I would go for them. Ola

No skills to repair centrifugal motor start switch

The 2 post lift came with a single phase motor with centrifugal switch. Which in a threephase country is an abomination. After some years the switch checked out. Opened motor, removed switch and pulled out the wire for the start winding Installed a 0,5 sec drop out relay feeding the start...

Crimped copper hard line fittings - most cost-effective system?

Some non US relevant input on copper pipes and their joints. In most of Europe, copper fittings are hard soldered ( brazed, not sure about the correct US term) with self fluxing hard solder. Copper parts need to be heated enough to be red. ( Ie around 550 C)The melted hard solder is sucked in...

    Simple fault code reader.

The CD4518 is fast and would maybe count several pulses on a normal small relay. A mercury wetted reed relay would be better. But do not have one and they are off limits now. In the sixties they were everywhere in industrial electronics. But since I have time on my hands and need things to...

    Simple fault code reader.

Affable Curmudgeon The one on Ricks movie is a late 80s model, very different socket . Same idea but the car I am involved in is a 1992. ( W140 with a M119 5 liter V8) It has a round device with lots of sockets placed in circular patterns. Downloading code thru three wires , a push button...

Thanks a lot. The counter will be running on floating 5V to 6 V supplied by AA battery pack. The pulse train in the car will be connected to counter over an optocoupler ( 4N35) thru your design of the schmitt trigger In this way I hope to avoid disturbances from the car. Maybe I am overly...

    Simple fault code reader.

Iron Block. Thanks a LOT for your schematic. About my only addition will be an optocoupler ( 4 N 35) that isolates the "counter" that runs on 4 AA cells from the transient rich car signal. I scoped that and I am pretty sure that the ignition pulses ( which are abt 18 kV before the plug fires)...

    Simple fault code reader.

The Old Wizard. Thanks. The UT is a bit out of date wrt design. But a good tutorial. There is a much easier way with low component count. CD4518 , a 16 pin DIL with two 4 bit counters. Count up to 256 binary or 99 decimal. Ola

    Simple fault code reader.

Thanks Iron Block. The CD4518 is a dual 4 bit BCD counter. Feeds two BCD to 7 segement chips CD 4511. I connect pin 1, ie clockpulse to +-0 over a 1k8 resistor to have a defined input impedance. The two resets , pins 7 and 15 are connected to +-0 when counting. Switch over to +5 when...

    Simple fault code reader.

Code reader now breadborded. Input circuit CD 4518 ( 2 off 4 bit counters in DIL 16 pin), 2 BCD to 7 segement CD 4511 and two 7 segment led displays Seems to work well. Input signal work remains. The CD 4518 is amazingly fast and will trigger on any "car type"transients. This was also noted...

Cost of Tools vs Cost of Service

Opportunity costs. The lazy persons excuse. Or cheapskate. Read Matthew Crawfords why we drive and shop class as soulcraft and Richard Sennet the craftsman to understand why you will improve your life doing your own repairs. I have been doing it for 71 years, starting with my bike when I was...

    tips for riveting aluminum

Try to find a workshop that works with aluminum aircraft repairs. Best would be a CATALINA shop , they know all about alu in salt water. They often have a VERY large amount of aircraft approved alu rivets in many patterns. And also very handy clips to hold the repair part thro holes that will...

    ECi power supply question

To me, the low voltage AC, 12,6 or 2x6,3 V output, would be a godsend for people who work on and/or repair amplifiers or the like with vacuum tubes. The filament voltage in this stuff after 1945 6,3 or 12,6 V. And the note in post above to load the AC voltage is correct, that will reduce...

How to remove this ball bearing?

Use the same number of bearing with an RS metal seal. Scrap the existing bearing and metal seal. RS means that ONE side of the bearing has a metal seal that is integrted in the bearing and totally dust and water proof from that side. Or use a 2RS which is sealed from both sides and lubricated...

How to clean my concrete floor to remove dust?

I had a garage 7x9 meters. Perfect concrete floor, absolutely level and straight. Underneath a 0,8 m compacted gravel fill to stop water being soaked up. Could spend every weekend sweeping dust. After 30 years!!!!!!!!!! Ended up repairing a guys Porsche 911 engine. He then put in a ceramic...

    Simple fault code reader.

Affable Curmudgeon. I am sure your solution would be perfect. However, my Arduino allergy makes it impossible. I may get Arduino rash all over me! Made a drawing with a CD4018, a dual 4 bit BCDcounter and two BCD to 7 segment drivers. 2 large 7 segment LED displays in red. I can then display...

    DIY Canvas Machinery Cover

Great Library. I started going to the library when I was 8. One of the nicest ones is in Clarksdale MS, a place i visit every second year. The Carnegie library and staff there are wonderful. I now live in a city where the city library is taken over by drug addicts phone idiots and people who...

Enginner 2 You are right . There is a multipole diagnostic connector ( Black plastic) on the right fender wall. Screwcap, diameter appr 50 mm. All you need is a LED and a pushbutton to read the codes. But counting flashes is a chore. Would like to get numbers. Have made a drawing for a 6...
