EvapoRust™ - Miracle elixir, or demon fluid from hell ?

I'd vote for it being good stuff. I think I'd stop short of "miracle," but it's taken many a rusty item in my garage and made it usable (even presentable) again. It seems to convert rust to some sort of reasonably durable black oxide. You can also use it on metal parts, wipe the black oxide off...

    Store closing

Ugh, I remember this when Circuit City was closing down - I think they may have actually brought other stuff in to sell to the people who were convinced they were one step away from shoplifting, when they were actually paying more than they would have down the street. Which isn't to say that...

Odd rectifier behavior in lawn mower

Update: the comments about voltage at the rectifier were correct that there was insufficient voltage there. Which got me wondering what the input voltage was, and intriguingly, it also seemed too low. Tracing the circuit towards the plug, I found that the voltage at the main junction between...

Odd rectifier behavior in lawn mower

That makes sense, that 110vac shouldn't magically turn into 17-25vdc. I'll check to make sure that the rectifier is 'seeing' 110vac input (i.e. that the switch hasn't failed) but as long as that's the case, I'll go ahead and order another rectifier. Thanks for the help!

Odd rectifier behavior in lawn mower

Thanks for the replies! Measuring DC voltage has produced anywhere from 17 to 25 vdc forward (red to red, black to black) and 0 vdc backward. It seems consistent within each time I connect the cables and fire up the switch, but inconsistent between times. Measuring AC voltage is 8 vac forward...

Odd rectifier behavior in lawn mower

This is probably a dumb question for the pros, but I can't wrap my head around why it's acting this way. Trying to fix an old Black & Decker electric lawnmower, the one Mom got many years ago. Never had to replace anything other than brushes, and perhaps a switch. Now it doesn't do anything at...

    Securing low-speed rotating assembly

Thanks for the ideas, guys! You know, Alchymist, I was wondering about something you mentioned in your answer, which was the orientation of the bolt. The bolt's head should be at the top, right? In other words, as the device rotates, if the threaded end of the bolt is facing upright and the nut...

    Securing low-speed rotating assembly

I think I may know the answer to this one, but can't hurt to ask the experienced guys first. So my girlfriend's brother made her a nifty little setup to hold her knitting yarn - it rotates to dispense the yarn. Works well, but the rotating assembly is secured to the base with a bolt, a few...

Tool storage and brand delima. 17y/o needs guidance.

Keep looking, deals are out there. Definitely agree with getting a well-used SO box that's dinged up but mechanically strong - as it will have tradein value in future. If you never ever have to move it again, deals occasionally come up on used Vidmar boxes...

    dryer turned parts tumbler?

Yeah, that was the issue. This was a few years ago but I believe I was using Purple Power or something to that effect - definitely not the detergent it was meant to use. Simple Green is probably too strong, in light of what you're saying.

    dryer turned parts tumbler?

I thought the same thing, and for awhile I was very proud of the heated, enclosed parts washer I'd made from a discarded dishwasher - until the degreaser ate enough of the electrical insulation from some part of the heating element that when I reached in to grab a tool, I got quite the surprise...

Some USA tool lots and sets for sale. Snap On, Craftsman, etc.

The bit driver is homemade, but it's cool. Looks like someone took the extension from a ratcheting bit driver, and mounted it to a spare hard-handle without the ratchet. Neat idea. Would you sell just the reverse Torx by themselves?

    throw-away society

Back when I was totally broke, we used to get so much stuff from craigslist... Lawnmower: free with bad wheel and broken pull string. Fixed with $10 in parts. Still running when we gave it away years later. Another lawnmower: free, nothing wrong with it (hey, thanks for giving it away instead...

Who is/are to blame for the decline of the american tools industry?

There are a billion people in China, and 99+% of them are lucky to have a vacation 10 miles from home. China's like Russia: you're either living hand-to-mouth or it's unlimited money. Depends on if you own a factory run with quasi-slave labor, or if you're one of the luckless factory hands.
