    The VISES of Garage Journal

Both of those vises turned out great! I’d like to hear more about the rust bluing finish, topped with BLO (think I’m reading that right). Could you give some detail on the process? Thanks!

    Bench grinder problems

Of course, you have to find the exact right size replacements, that’s what you do when you replace bearings. It’s really not that difficult, look at the old bearing, get the numbers off of it. Buy a new one. EDIT: Apologies, didn’t notice the age of this thread.

Who makes 3/8" Chrome Semi-Deep Sockets?

I’m generally a Proto guy, so I did a bit of searching on their somewhat hard to use website and found the info on intermediate depth sockets. Proto offers 8 line ups: 1/4” drive, 3/8”, 1/2”, and 3/4” in both SAE and Metric, but as noted earlier, only in 12 point variants. The 3/8” metrics...

How to tackle this HVAC penetration?

I see no one has mentioned mortar to grout around the lines, which would have been my go-to for this. Maybe 2” thick, enough to withstand the elements, but thin enough to get chiseled out should the need to replace the line set arise. So what am I missing, guessing there must be a downside...

    This guy worth $40?

Also, you could register at VintageMachinery and put up a wanted ad for the piece, or depending on how handy you are, fabricate up a bracket that would serve the same function to hold the table but without the gear raising mechanism.

    This guy worth $40?

Skeer, That’s a good drill press, well worth what you paid for it, and good job on cleaning it up and getting it into working condition. I’ve got a couple of DP-600’s awaiting the time for a restore, and along the way may have an extra table for you. The extra is not in good shape, has quite...

Storm Door Replacement - what do I need to know?

I need to replace a storm door, 2 actually, and would like some feedback from the folks on GJ. While the project seems straightforward enough, I’ve never replaced a storm door and thought I’d ask before proceeding. It’s a 1960’s brick ranch, existing storm doors have seen better days, a couple...

Bosch 1” SDS Plus rotary hammer on clearance at Lowe’s for $143.17 and 2 free 4.0 batteries

Seems this thread is referencing two different models; the OP posted about a 1” model GBH18v-26D w/ 2 4.0aH batteries, which I can’t locate on Lowe’s website. I can only find the tool itself at $219, not on sale, nor with batteries. Subsequent posts are about a 3/4” model that is on sale...

    Milwaukee Fails

I recall that thread, and being amazed at the amount of passion, to be polite, exhibited by folks defending the brand, and/or taking issue with posters who were rightfully complaining about the move to cheapen the mechanism. I’ve got yellow, red, and blue brands (Bosch, not Makita) and they’ve...

****'s Sporting Goods - search for Keen shoes, heavy discounts...

Got the 2 pair I ordered today; Unfortunately they shipped both pairs in EE Wide, which does me no good. Verified that I had ordered D Mediums. Guess I can send them back but it appears they’re sold out of my size now, and the discounts are largely gone.

    Compressor motor conversion

I couldn’t help myself and had to look up your model….admitting that I was thinking of the smaller, portable Jenny compressors in my post above. A quick search delivered this chart. It‘s a full blown 2 stage unit delivering 17.5CFM at 175psi using 760 rpm pump speed - which clears things up...

    Compressor motor conversion

I have heard this as well, never seen it defined anywhere though. Regardless, to determine if you could use a smaller HP motor, or what the HP needs to be, you should look at the pump rating in CFM and pressure at a rated rpm input and determine your needs. A bit of a way to cheat would be to...

18in deep benches for my walls?

Thanks for the additional information and the extra pictures. Like I said earlier, while it’s a small space, I really like how you have set it up. Looks very well thought out and I bet you can get a lot of work done in there. Also it just seems to have a really good “feel”, I think largely...

18in deep benches for my walls?

Just catching up on this thread, but I’m intrigued by your setup in the shed. Can you share some basics, (size, construction) of the shed and perhaps a few more pics? It looks like a small but well planned space. Also, what are the toolboxes…..custom paint job, or purchased that way? I...

    Finding used Garden Tractor Parts

I’d keep checking eBay and see what comes up, though it won’t be a quick hunt. I’m in a similar boat maintaining a early ‘90’s Troy Bilt garden tractor, although most parts I’ve needed are generic, like getting a new hydraulic hose made, redoing some of the wiring, adapting lights, etc...

Lincoln Viking 3350 vs Miller Elite

Just went through the same debate, needed an upgrade from my Antra off shore helmet that hasn't been functioning reliably lately. Seemed the lower end price point for premium helmets is in the $3-$400 range. The Lincoln 3350 has solid reviews all around, and the $50 debate sealed the deal. I...

How much of a ****** will it be to get this vise off? (with Photos of hitch-style bench retrofit)

As you probably know, those Starrett vise are very high quality, a great vise even if it's on the smaller side. A cut off wheel will take care of your problem. Agree with others, stay away from the vise, the table is fixable.

So you don't care that Grainger sells this set at this price but you start a thread about it? Just bored then? Geez.

RED ALERT!!! According to the Torque Test Channel Milwaukee Has Totally Screwed the Pooch on the High Torque Impact

I understand what Milwaukee is doing; they're simply honoring their 5 year warranty with the model A impacts. If you think that has such significance, well good for you. Guess I'm not that easily amazed, brother.

RED ALERT!!! According to the Torque Test Channel Milwaukee Has Totally Screwed the Pooch on the High Torque Impact

100% of people with the B units are still covered by a 5-year warranty, and will get an A unit if their B fails. Right, so what exactly did they do that’s so extraordinary? It seems like the best interpretation is they will allow you to preemptively warranty your B model before it fails, but...
