Brake hard line - repair or replace

If you're DIYing it why not just replace the whole line? I just did my whole truck for under $100 in lines. It took me about 8 hours to replace all the lines so the major shop expense is labor. The piece of mind knowing I don't have rotted lines that I'll have to replace a year down the...

anybody here willing to machine some gears?

Load the material. Then write the check for the tooling Then write the payment check for the machine, then write the check for the material. Not much labor there, just lots of capital.

Build a V12 that only needs a drop of oil to run.

Too bad it doesn't actually combust, just air powered. Otherwise incredible work!(and I think a repost)

    Vintage Indy Garage

If you're into this sort of thing you can NOT miss the speedway motors museum in Lincoln, NE. The place is huge, 3 stories of all sorts of neat stuff. From direct injected SBF motors, to DOHC small blocks, to toy cars of all sizes, to Indy cars of all sorts. They have a similar display.

first house, first garage: an intro and questions

Since I seem to be spending more time here, I might as well update this thread. It's been very much a work space so functionality is paramount. Since I've moved in 4 years ago, I've put up 7 4' T36 lights, painted the cinder block wall, put up the cabinets that came with the house, put up...

    Garage under house or Detached?

CO meter in both the garage(regardless of location) and the house. It could save your life one day, my wife nearly lost hers to it due to a faulty furnace.

    Garage under house or Detached?

One more thing that I struggle with, hoses and electrical. The one really open wall is cinder block, so I end up running drop cords everywhere which can be a pain. I have some plugs in the ceiling which are just as much of a pain since the cord can work it's way out due to gravity. Still...

    Garage under house or Detached?

You should have a CO alarm both in the house and the garage IMHO. I don't worry about CO with the alarm, but a fire that's another ball of wax(another pile of oily rags?)

    Garage under house or Detached?

I've got a basement garage as well and agree with most of this. Generally I love it for the mild climate without any heating/cooling. Here in middle NC it stays between 75 and 55 all year long no matter if it's 100 or 0 outside. It also allowed us to get a ridiculous amount of shop space for...

Need some help with explanation with wife...

No dog in the fight, but per the original poster of that graphic, it's a percentage, not numbers of failures. More installations just means a bigger sample size, and generally a better statistic.

    Broken bit in impact driver

Definitely impact bits. I use my impact driver to zip on/off lug nuts. I've twisted a pair of adapters before finding the impact rated ones. Since then I've had no issues at all.

    Welcome to Homeownership

Welcome to homeownership, I closed on our first house about 3 weeks ago. Lowes/Home Depot will soon become your favorite or your most hated store. You wouldn't believe how much I spent there in the first two weeks.

    car for kids suggestions

Hmm I see they've graduated past the bubble wrap? Another option to think about is a Hyundai. An old roommate of mine has/had 2 and he can attest for it's safety(wrecked the first one) and reliability. They're cheap since they have the korean stigma, but have come a long way in the...

    moogoob's 10x21 needs some love

Can you go up at all? Getting things up and off the floor helped alot in my old rental garage.

first house, first garage: an intro and questions

Thanks for the link. The ceiling is already insulated with fiberglass bats between the floor joists but that's it. I'm not too worried about insulating the basement since I'm in NC and our weather is relatively mild, but it's on the list of to be thinking about for the future. I'm mostly...

first house, first garage: an intro and questions

My wife and I are closing on our first house at the end of the month, and I'm looking for ways to "improve" the garage. It's a basement drive out garage about 1100 sq ft in size, but with a low ceiling ~7-7.5feet tall. It's two bays, one 23x 14.5 and the other 55x14.5 The very first thing on...

    Downsizing :(

think of it this way, at least you have a garage... I've just upgraded from driveway repairs to a 1 car garage at my current apt, but I'm already itching for more space. There are a few ways to make the most of the space, most of what I've found is in this thread.
