Tool prices over time. Cheaper or more expensive?

I'm with the 'they are cheaper' crew. Tools certainly seem cheaper now in Oz than some time ago and this is largely because of Chinese imports. But the quality stuff is also cheaper - although not by as much.

Good Quality Tools that anyone can afford.

I guess it depends on how much you want/can afford to spend but here in Oz I mostly only ever find junk in my local stores. The good (German) stuff is outrageously expensive and I can buy it online (including shipping all the way to Oz) generally at half to two-thirds the price.

Snap on knives at menards/made in china

Re: Snap on knifes at menards/made in china Love it! Buy German tools - they are still made in Germany.

Possibly the most important tool in my shop.

I prefer the instant variety too - with milk. The real thing tastes too strong/bitter to me mostly.

    How much would you give?

I'm also with the $150 crew. These things come up fairly often. If it was in real good condition and I REALLY wanted it, maybe a bit more - but I am not an expert on this sort of thing.

I'm $50 into this, and don't have what I want -- narrow long nose pliers

You would be hard-pushed to do better than these advanced by tweedlestan

    Who makes the best pliers?

Well, as the OP I thought it was up to me to make a conclusion - especially since this makes it 100 posts (after the original) on this thread! Looks like KNIPEX gets the most votes, hands down, in answer to my original question.

    Standard, calibrated, lengths?

It is easy to buy standard weights for calibrating/checking balances. But can you get standard lengths (pieces of steel?) for checking that the output from digital (in particular) vernier calipers are accurate? Or is there some other completely different way to go about this?

    Who makes the best pliers?

Thanks for the link to this highly specialised and very elegant stuff. They have some side cutters on their new products page which they say have cutting edges of 85 HRC - a whole 20 points or more harder than anything I have seen from Knipex or anyone else. Should make short work of even piano...

    Who makes the best pliers?

I am not advertising for anyone but suggest you might try Olsenstore in Hamburg - just go to eBay and search for Knipex. You will get many entries and many of them will be Olsenstore and they include shipping in their prices. Chadstoolbox in the US also has many Knipex. Someone else here may...

    Who makes the best pliers?

I use bent-nose needle-nose pliers for all sorts of things about the house from fishing jammed, broken cork out of the neck of wine bottles to picking up hot things to cutting string/cord/cable not readily cut with scissors. And these are just 'about-the-house' jobs. Not work. These are my...

    Who makes the best pliers?

Thanks for all the great responses guys. Makes a newbie feel welcome. In my original post, I was going to offer my view on the 'best' but decided against it - then. That view was/is - Knipex. I also like Channellock but the finish on them is just not up there with Knipex. I don't really...

    Who makes the best pliers?

I know - you all groaned when you saw that heading! Another newbie asking the perennially dumb question. But I did search here, could not find any particular view, do have a range of pliers (Channellock, Knipex, NWS as well as some cheaper/cheapies) of my own - and I am really interested in...
