No. They're safe queens that get taken out a couple times a year for cleanings. The pins are tapered and smoothed at the ends anyway. I also have some heat shrink tubing that I havent gotten around to putting on yet.

My problem is I wouldn't be able to tell if a used lathe is in good condition or worn out. And I don't know anyone that knows anything about lathes to come with me to look at one.

Nope. The pins are slightly pitched up so gravity holds them on. Plus the pins go all the way to the end of the barrel. It would take an awfull lot to make them fall off if it's even possible.
