I love how a little tool shopping can be such therapy! I am right there with you. Those pliers would be a great item even in worse condition, but with that much of the finish intact, they are amazing!

I picked up an early electric clock about 2 weeks ago. I was in bad shape, I don't even think I was charged for it. It was from the early days when electricity in houses was not very reliable, so you had to keep an eye on the clocks and see if they had stopped. If so you needed to 'spin start'...

I am getting forgetful and may have told this story before... As a kid most of our tools were marked 'Ford RR' - Family history was that my great grandfather was a personal friend of Henry Ford which I have confirmed with the Ford museum. I believe these tools came out of the Ford 'River...

I got out to an estate sale and did find two Mossberg pressed steel wrenches. I tend to always pick these up because they tend to be missing from the sets. I also picked up a lovely (1929?) Whirldry washer for Mrs Duddly, that ungrateful bit... of sunshine! It was just too odd so for $15 I am...

BlueBomber - congrats on the sale! I think I need to do a little thinning of the collection around here. Here is a follow-up on the chest / drawers I picked up last weekend. I still need to work on the inside of the drawers, but for now I glued a few joints to steady it up and polished the...

Thanks guys - I think we have an answer!! that looks like it! :rocker: A follow-up on my little set of wooden drawers. The OCD kicked in and I took a circular saw to the top edge and trimmed about 1/4 inch off the left side (and a piece of trim they had added) and the drawers now fit the same...

The cabinet is very crude. The drawers are flush one one end and stick out on the other. It is practically folk art. I don't know how far I will take it. I have a guy who could make drawers that you could not tell they were replacements, but I may just leave a few "shelves" here are some...

I think you may be right, I see some similar burnishers. The point is incredibly sharp (ask me how I know) and it must be good steel to have held that point without bending or breaking all of these years. (FYI - no markings on it at all)

I did not have the weekend some of you had, but I hit an interesting estate sale. One of the original 1800s farm houses in DC. Unfortunately the last few decades had been a hoarding situation and the house will be torn down. I found a cabinet with drawers in the basement - Only had 1 drawer...

Picked up little Reed 103 1/2 vise off FBM for $25 this morning. With a quick cleanup it's gonna be a sweet little vise! Hopefully it's a good sign of things to come.

    2021 Home Depot's deals/sales/clearance thread

BS is using open APIs, but they do seem to have better information than others. You can imagine that they are "scraping" or using readily available APIS, but they do an excellent job of it. If they can start getting pricing information, they will. I find BS a good resource for clearance...

LS STARRETT CO (and not a vise)

hmmm... 3M radial bristles... I think we may need to hijack the thread for a moment or two. Those look interesting. Is the kit the way to get start (gulp - price!) or are there only a few 'grits' you need. I noticed that the wire gauge looked really good with no obvious scratches.

Nice set there RTM! A lot of people like wood working tools (planes, chisels, etc) but machinists tools are my weakness

I have always called them 'soldering brushes' but it looks like they are more general purpose than that. Still sold today with this description: This Whisk Wire Brush made of carbon wire with looped steel handle is a general purpose tool for removing chips, solder, brazing and welding. Also...

ehhh... oops.. my attempt at humor. I was saying that immersing myself in alcohol made me not care anymore. I have not actually tried alcohol immersion on old paper items. I do agree with the fact that they can get some musty smells.

I have tried the full immersion in alcohol method and can report that it works fairly well. I could not smell much of anything after my full immersion in alcohol, or maybe I just didn't care anymore. My recollection is a bit hazy..
