    Paint Question for Metal Cabinets

I repainted a few in my shop. I just washed them down with TSP. Prior to painting I wiped them again with acetone. I used the paint Tractor Supply sells, Majic brand tractor and implement enamel. I added a little of their hardner into each batch I mixed. I used a cheapy HVLP spray gun, they came...

    Parts Washing Tank

I recently picked up a decent Safety-Kleen drum type parts cleaner. The light was missing on it and I'd like to see if any type of filters are available for it. I went to Safety-Kleens web site. Unless I was not looking in the right places it only showed the models they sell/service... I could...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

Yes, it is missing. Actually I have half of it. The front and one side is missing. I had a gentleman on the Gertsner forum send me a piece of oak to make a new front. The sides appear to be poplar. While cleaning it today I noticed the front cover panel was broken where it sits in the top piece...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

Two of my wooden chests. The darker unit is a Gerstner. The other is a Union. The Union I refinished a few years back. The Gerstner I am currently in the process of refinishing. It won't be a full restoration as I will be using it in my small shop. Just repairing some small damage here and...

    DPDT Switch Wiring Help

A drum switch is an option. However, I kind of wanted to retain the originality of the machine. While it originally was only on and off I was hoping that since the new motor had the capabilities of reversing I would try to do that with a toggle switch. I attached a pic of what the original...

    DPDT Switch Wiring Help

I recently purchased a new 110/220vac motor. I would like to wire in a simple DPDT toggle switch ON-OFF-ON to be used on the low voltage side 110vac. I sure could use some help wiring this switch to the leads coming out of the motor. Is it even possible with a 6 pole DPDT switch? I would like to...

good cleaner for cabinets before sanding

I would also suggest TSP... If not then I guess one of the cleaners suggested above. I would possibly follow up with a liquid de-glosser, Liquid Sandpaper or something like that.

    Parts Cleaning

Before I purchased a regular wash tank with pump I used a cake pan. Went to Wal-Mart and got the biggest deepest cheapo cake pan. Still have it, use it for cleaning parts with paint stripper now.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Spent the last 2 days just putting things away and cleaning up a little. Getting a new left knee. Not sure how long I'll be laid up. Hopefully, I'll be able to at least walk out to the shop after several days.....

    Weight limit for wall-mounted cabinets?

Apparently a lot more than I realized. Over the course of time one doesn't realize just how much "stuff" he can cram into cabinets. Once I started cleaning up the mess I did in fact realize I had WAY to much weight in them. I now have open shelving out of 3/4" plywood and plenty of cleats and...

    Weight limit for wall-mounted cabinets?

I had used wood kitchen cabinets. I thought I had them secured well. As you can see, apparently not... I had screws with washers into every stud behind them. I was working in the shop and started hearing this creaking and cracking noise. I was watching as they slowly started just falling off...

    Have A Vintage Wilton Vise?

I was lucky enough to find this at a local tractor show this past weekend. It has 4" smooth jaws and the number 171 on the key on the bottom. I have searched all over looking for info on the Wilton vises. I'm guessing from what I have read the # 171 means it was built January of 1971 ? I was...

    Maytag Portable A/C

I had a Maytag portable A/C give to me. When I first tried it out it would blow 68 to 70 degree air out. Not great, but I thought it would be ok for the shop. After about an hour it was over 80 in the shop, when I turned it on the shop was 73. It was vented to the outside also. Are these things...

Proper method to get water from house to detached garage?

I ran mine a minimum of 36" deep to my shop. It's approx. 130' I used the black pipe used for well supplies. It goes through the wall into my basement and to a yard hydrant right beside the shop. I'd keep it at least 30 to 36" deep, maybe deeper depending on your areas frost line.

    Exterior Siding Stain

Well, Home Depot has Behr Professional for $167.00 per 5 gal. That small of a difference I guess I'll go with Sherwin Williams.
