PVC isnt going to be rigid enough...I tried. I ended up using 3" steel conduit I got cheap and painted black.

I used 1/4" luan. I stained a checkboard pattern using 'merlot' and 'ebony'. I recessed my florecent lights, but have halogens for party time. Yes its a dark color, I just installed more florecent lights to make up for it.....if I ever get tired of the dark color and paint it white or something...

I stained mine witha latex stain first....looked great....lasted 4 years. Last year I went over with the same color latex paint
