I'm voting that you find a nice couple of acres and build a 60 x 110. Section 1/3 for shop and 2/3 for living. You can make this steel building very efficient and nice inside. That would be 2100+ sqf shop and take what you would have spent on the exterior of a house and make it awesome inside...
