    gutter alternatives?

I've never liked the look of them so I don't have gutters. I put landscape fabric, edging and stone 2' out from my foundation. Runoff from the roof hits it in the middle and migrates down to my positive drain

    New garage build sequence question

I'm in the same boat although due to temps not rain. My concrete guy wants the building up so we can heat it. Not a bad thing to wait. The longer the fill has to settle the better for the slab

What did you do "TO" your garage today?

Finished cheating on 1 side. 8 more sheets to put up to finish the other side tomorrow. I'll be happy when this phase of construction is done

Support Beams for a Wood Mezzanine

Ha ve a 24x40 loft on the back of my shop. Use 5 1/4×18 LVLs w8th Simpson hangers. It's what they're designed for. Like said above, use nails designed for hangers. Even better, get your hands on a bostitch strip shot gun. It's made to shoot nails 8n metal fasteners. I put hurricane ties on...

Winter Construction & Pole Sleeve Concerns

If it's at all possible, I'd try to refinish the pine. Do all sides. Even a coat of primer will help it last.

How to put up tall walls and trusses?

I just finished framing a 40x64x14 by myself. Did the walls in 16 ft sections, leaving the last 2x6 and the top plate off. Put these in when the next section was stood. I stood most of these by myself with an excavator but a couple were stood by hand with a couple buddies. 8 ft sections on...

    Metal commercial building advice needed

I think your numbers may be a lot low. I'm in the beginning stages of a 40x64. A 4' frost wall was 12,000.00 and a 5" slab will be 8500.00. These are cash prices to guys I work with and its 1/4 of the size you are talking.

Easier to remove it and you'll get at more of it. Only downfall is it can be brittle. It is cheap to replace though

    Lakefront race shop

You did a nice job of making the shop blend with the house and the property. Looks spectacular. I too have a 14 yr old daughter...time goes too fast

Best Paint/Primer for Old Wood Shingle Siding

The slow trying oil primers will block tannins better. I agree with Stuart on the prep, just protect yourself as older houses can have lead. Use SW or Ben Moore. Stay away from the Behr. Not as good quality, and a pain to get mixed and pick up. You can call your local paint store, tell them...

Ever lose a tool and find it days/weeks/months/years later?

Not a tool but.....My FIL plants about 15 acres of corn every year as a hobby. Grandkids pick and sell it for charity. Then he plows under whatever is left. Neighbor likes to till the aisles with his small JD tractor so we can enjoy summer evening side by side rides. Lost his wallet one day...

Replacing Pole Barn Siding / Dressier Options

FIL re-sided his old barn with new metal. It's 80x200x20 and highly visible from the house so he wanted to dress it up. Used a stone veneer product called stack n tack on the bottom 4'. Comes in panels about 6"-8"×2' that lock together and get screwed off. We put it over plywood wrapped with...

    Crazy permit costs

Not sure why you need to know where I live in order for me to post an observation. But if it makes you feel better I live in southern Maine (I thought that showed in my sig but I guess not). Wasn't trying to start a political debate. Some guys have posted some fees that I would consider high...

    Crazy permit costs

I've been popping in and out of this site for years and it never ceases to amaze me how much some of you guys have to pay for building permits. Or the hoops you have to jump through to get them. I'd be pretty bent if my permit cost as much as my truss package!!! I raise a beverage of choice...
