Just found this thread (bump : ) after picking up a Baldor 3/4 hp buffer w/ stand yesterday. Have some motorcycle bits and hand tools I'd like to shine up. Newbie question: how do you hold the spindle to get the 'last' nut off? I see some old vise grip marks on mine but assuming that's not...

fyi, I finally got the chuck 'open' using a 24mm socket & BFH. In case anyone is interested here is what the internals look like

Thanks all. My lathe has the Timken bearings which I assumed made it a later model... but the spindle is definitely a 8tpi

Trying to get my Atlas 618 lathe up and running. The lathe came with a 5" Cushman chuck that I can't figure out how to separate the back plate from the chuck to clean. Might not even be worth the effort as I still need to source an additional back plate to mount to my 8 tpi thread. Any tips...

Thanks so much for sharing JoCo! Started owning Craftsman tools in 1977 (1st year as a carpenter). They were cheap, easy to acquire, and had a money back guarantee : ). This damn group now has me searching for earlier Craftsman and influenced me to also seek out Plomb.

Found the other day at 2nd hand store. PO tried to make it look "old school" by applying stickers and covering with laquer. :lol_hitti Removed stickers, should I try and remove lacquer? Cleaned w/ WD40 & steel wool. Looks nice on top of the toolmobile : )

I found this on ebay: Vintage Pocket Pennsylvania Railroad Lead seal plyers which looks like it's missing the adjustable top piece. Now I just gotta figure out what I need to seal : ) . Rick

Thanks for help everyone. The top round piece is adjustable through a set screw (careful, it's left handed thread). The pieces are both flat with a diameter of 1/2"

Found this at a garage sale yesterday and picked it up just 'cuz it was different. Has the 3 triangle Utica logo and appears to be something the presses or crimps. No tool number, just the brand. Thanks, Rick

by the way, what's the "F" stand for? Seems like a weird tool marking as it's 5 digit vs. the typical 4.

Started my Plomb collection backwards, finding the ToolMobile first and then picking up a nice beginning assortment of hand tools. Ignore the Proto ratchet 'hiding' in the middle of the Plombs :) . Although I'm only half way thru this thread (wow!), I've seen mention of copper like coating...

Picked up this Plomb ToolMobile this week. Pretty nice shape. Cleaned and waxed it. No serial number and painted emblem, so guessing mid 40's (?). Thought the clip on socket rail was cool. Paid $125 in Southern Oregon. Rick :beer:

Here are the CL ad pics. I have it apart cleaning the many years of grime. Came with a small lot of Plumb hand tools as well. Has anyone had any luck in finding a paint match? Going to leave the outside as is, but the pull down drawer lid is pretty rusty w/out much paint left on it.

Another Oregon ToolMoblie ! Just picked this up today in Grants Pass. Fantastic shape if you consider it was made in the 40's.
