    Suggestions for sandblasting mask

I'll be using a pressure pot blaster outdoors, mostly for blasting trailer frames, furniture, etc. I have a great respirator to protect my nose/lungs, but am curious about using a grinder mask like this one over the respirator...

    Pressure pot blaster suggestions

Question is directed to anyone who has a small pressure pot blaster (100lbs and less). I'm in the market for one to use outdoors on trailer frames, furniture and other items that won't fit in my Trinco cabinet. I'm not really interested in going cheap and having to do a bunch of mods. My...

    Best budget USA tools

Hey everyone, I'm looking to stock some mechanics tools at my cottage in northern WI so I don't have to lug stuff back and forth from home. I've been scouring ads here and locally for USA made tools (sockets, wrenches, etc.). That said, was wondering if you have any suggestions for...

Torin upper/lower 42" box at Costco

I'm in the market for a new box. I'm a weekend warrior and won't be pounding on the box like I used to. I was in Costco the other day and saw a Torin 42x22 upper and lower box combo for $499. Seemed decent for the $$ and well within the budget. I'm curious if anyone has purchased this and...

Short pieces of 3/4" od soft copper

Was wondering if anyone knows of a place that will sell 4 to 5 foot lengths of 3/4 soft copper? I have a couple of compressors I'm building aftercoolers for, and both have 3/4 tube fittings in the head. Only option I can find around here is 50' I'm in the Milwaukee area, but would happily pay...

Air compressor bungs - dope or no?

Found a smokin' deal on a Speedaire 7.5hp 80 gal compressor. Unit had minor damage from a forklift - some tank paint scratched (tank not compromised), pressure switch broken. Rest of the unit is pristine. The tank side bung that adapts down to 3/4 has an O ring at the base of the bung and...

Removing mill scale in cold weather

I've had good results using a white vinegar soak for a day or 2 to remove mill scale from steel tube and flat bar. The problem I have is that my garage shop hovers around freezing most of the winter. The cold inhibits the ability of the acid to do it's work in a timely manner. Been noodling...

    Vinegar strength

Hey all... For years I've used everything from naval jelly to electrolysis to wire/flap wheels to elbow grease to remove rust and mill scale. Even tried some muriatic acid (worked great but way too many fumes). Recently, I've been using white vinegar with mixed results. First time I tried it...

    Options for dismount

Folks, I picked up an 80 gal vertical air compressor. It was loaded on my trailer with a forklift. The problem - my engine hoist isn't tall enough to be positioned on the ground and still be able to lift the compressor off the trailer deck. The compressor is new, so I'm reluctant to...

    New compressor - 50 or 60a circuit?

Good morning, I'm a little torn trying to figure this out. I've always worked under the rule that the breaker/device is there to protect the wire. I have a new 7.5hp compressor waiting to be wired in. My garage shop has a 60a subpanel. Compressor install manual recommends a 60a breaker...

    It's time... (finally!)

This August will mark the 20th anniversary of our home. Our garage serves double duty as my hobby metalworking shop as well as the occasional car and truck service. All of my machines are on carts with urethane casters, and I do move them frequently to facilitate my needs - metal cutting...

Paint recommendations for pallet rack beams

Hey all, I found a smoking deal locally on a couple of pallet racks. Only problem is the beams are rough. I'll be installing the racks in the shop/garage, and my bride isn't keen on the mix of orange, rust and black magic marker (neither am I, actually). I'll be blasting the beams this...

    Quality taps

This weekend, I purchased a used Matco set of taps and dies. Set was complete, with no dings. I needed to tap some 3/8-16 and 1/2-13 holes in hot roll flat bar. Even going slow I ended up breaking both taps. Wondering what you all are using? Prefer USA made. Thx, Rick Sent from my SM-G975U...

    Organizer thoughts

I got a smokin' deal on a closeout 44 lower from HF ($258) last week. Looking for ideas on organizers, especially for pliers. I'm using the Ernst socket racks and like them a lot, but I'm on the fence with their plier organizer. I have approx 60 sets of plier/crimper tools, and a number of...

Thoughts on Wen (Kodiak Pro) tool cabinets

Folks, I saw this ad on CL the other day: https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/tld/5194875031.html Curious how these boxes stand up compared to HF? The pricing is nice, and they're only a short drive away. Thanks in advance, Rick

What exactly is a MKE 6238-20 AC/DC bandsaw?

Looking at a new porta-band. The Milwaukee 6232 saws caught my eye. But they also have a 6238 saw with similar specs, but it's classified as AC/DC. There's not much on the MKE site about the difference. Anyone shed any light on the difference? Thanks... Rick
