Air compressor bungs - dope or no?

Found a smokin' deal on a Speedaire 7.5hp 80 gal compressor. Unit had minor damage from a forklift - some tank paint scratched (tank not compromised), pressure switch broken. Rest of the unit is pristine.

The tank side bung that adapts down to 3/4 has an O ring at the base of the bung and seals against the tank. No other sealant is present.

Should I add pipe dope, something else (like Loctite) or nothing at all?

Nothing at all.

Do check the o-ring though. If the surface is starting to look like a dried up rubber band, replace it. After 20-30 years, some start to dry rot and eventually leak.

Did you get a Grainger Second Hand, damaged in transit, wholesale unit ?

We are drowning in them down here,.... Ive got one as well ( a champion anyway from Grainger scratch and dent )

Several earlier versions of me, as I was employed as a industrial electrician, I was working with black pipe just about every day (pneumatic controls ).

I figured out if you have poorly cut threads ( we have a boat load of Chyna black pipe in this country now ), if you cant get it sealed with every last product you buy, try Loctite 565. Its the magic bullet for obstinate black pipe fittings ( after you get down stream from your manifold oring ).

Thanks for the feedback - I'm getting the piping done next week. Breaking the unit in now - pressure checks after break in.

O-ring is brand new and undisturbed. My original question was precipitated by my installation of a 3" 3/4 NPT ****** into the bung. The bung was a bit loose and I removed it for inspection. Everything looks good.
