Metrics - where the hell are they??

no, I'm not talking about wrenches and sockets. Finding metric mechanic tools is as challenging as going to your nearest tool monger, be it a hardware store, big box, auto parts joint, Wally world, whatever. No, I'm talking about finding metric drill bits, especially bits suitable for wood...

    Cal-Ranch - Clearing out Hobart

Cal-Ranch stores, a ranch and farm chain in the Intermountain West is changing over from carrying Hobart welders and welding stuff to Lincoln Electric. They're clearancing the Hobart stuff. Most of it was 25% off currently, should be dropping more. Example: Hobart Leather Welding jackets...

MIG problem - What's causing it, and ...

what's the solution? Weekend before last, I welded on my cyclone cart, then put the welder away. Today I go to use it, decide to do a few practice beads first. Working with 1/8" plate (is it "plate" at 1/8", or does that fall into "sheet metal"?), so I changed the metal setting. Welder is a...

How large of a welding table for furniture work?

Options for size are either 3' x 4' or 2' x 3'. One dimension must be at least 3' for parking clearance over my Handy Lift. For both cost and more importantly, mobility reasons, I can't go much larger. This will be used primarily for furniture building, with the assorted shop jig/fixture as well.

Need a board, er, tube stretcher... - Welding fab question

So, I ventured into the world of welding again this weekend, part of turning my single stage dust collector into a 2 stage cyclone collector with HEPA filter. The welding aspect of things went more or less to plan... but, it turns out the plan itself was in error. :scared: (Note, I'm the one...

Armstrong Box - Maker and Slide Replacement?

I have a line on a used Armstrong 56" (?) roller box. There's not a lot of info on them, so I'm wondering if anybody knows who made them for Armstrong (it is US made IIRC), and whether the slides can be upgraded to something stouter. Methinks it has <100lb slides.

Orphaned wires, what to do with 'em?

I'm going to be pulling (DELETING) the 50 amp 240v double pole range circuit in my main panel and putting in a 60-100 amp feed to a subpanel (surface mount). The range is gas, so I don't need the circuit (space in panel) for it, but I do need it for the sub. My question is, "what do I do with...

Buffs and Burrs (no, not a beefcake calendar shoot in Siberia)

As indicated in another thread, I have a Metabo Die Grinder en route, and will be needing some tooling to use with it. Epstein's has a variety of burrs available, a bunch of which are on closeout. So, help me spend my money!! Starting from nada, working primarily with steel and maybe some...

    Electric Die Grinder, which one?

So, I'm going to be getting an electric 1/4" die grinder, and would like some suggestions. The primary use will be metal work and weld cleanup. Variable speed or not? What length of nose? I'm looking at some of the major tool makers, DeWalt, Makita, Bosch, and Hitachi. Fein or Metabo are...

    Simple Fab Alignment problem

So, I'm building another mobile base, this one for Uncle Max, my jointer/planer. The base is a simple rectangle (roughly 28" x 22") with two additional interior members running the long way, overbuilt using 2" square tubing. I've got the first corner done, and the first interior member...

    Welding hood and fogging

Yesterday, I was using my new welder for the first time, along with using my newly completed welding station. It was nice and cool outside, and my welding helmet was fogging up. What solutions, pray tell, have y'all found for this predicament?

Wire Cup Wheel Size for 4.5" Grinder?

I just recently ordered an assortment of abrasive discs and a pair of wire wheels for use with my 4.5" grinders. They arrived yesterday, and the 4.5" wire cup is HUGE :willy_nil:eyecrazy:. (Or, in keeping with the season, "YUUUUGE!") Now, it will cost as much to send it back, so I'll be...

    Cabinet Saw station build

I'm going to be building a mobile station incorporating my 3hp SawStop PCS. The saw is pimped out nicely, with a Benchdog Cast Iron Router Table, Router lift, SawStop Sliding Table, and an Incra Fence. The cast iron wing that was replaced on the left side by the sliding table has migrated to...

Portable Bandsaw - DeWalt or Milwaukee or ??

I've pretty much settled on getting a portable bandsaw for my near term metal cutting requirements, a bunch of 1"x1" up to 2"x2" square tubing, no more than 1/8" thick. The majority of the cuts will be 90deg, with a small number of 45deg cuts thrown in. The question at hand is: Milwaukee or...

    Handled "punches"??

I'd like to pick up some handled punches for light tapping/punching. Why, you may ask? Because using my Torx and hex drivers as punches is something I'd like to get away from. Does such a tool exist, and if so, who makes 'em?

Bolt sizing - vise mounting and general principles...

So, I'm about to mount my Athol vise temporarily, and no surprise, I have no instructions. Marking it out and such is no problem, my question concerns the actual size (diameter) of the bolts. Should I used bolts that exactly match the vise base hole size, and drill the mounting surface 1/16"...

    Attaching metal top to workbench

So, I've got the workbench expansion almost complete, and have come to the point of attaching the metal top to the wood substrate. Suggestions on how to go about that? The metal plate is 1/8" steel, the wood substrate is 1 5/8" Douglas Fir. I am reluctant to attach it permanently.

    Grinder Wheel Sizing Questions

I'm looking at getting a slow speed grinder to use for sharpening lathe tools. I'll be using one, or perhaps 2 CBN wheels. Unfortunately, none of the preferred grinder size / speed options land in the sweet spot for SFPM as recommended by the CBN wheel makers. A 10" wheel at slow speed...

    Welding torch interchangeability?

A simple question regarding MIG torches, MIG spoolguns, TIG torches, etc. How interchangeable are they? Not MIG to TIG, but using a Lincoln TIG torch on a Miller machine, or a Tweco torch on an ESAB, etc? :willy_nil Or is this one of those ******** proprietary areas? :headscrat

Removing rust and cutting sheet steel, best options?

I picked up a remnant of 1/8" (approx) steel (12" x 79") for my bench rebuild. The sheet is a bit oversized, so I will need to cut it down sightly. It also has a pretty robust case of surface rusties. My experience working with metal, other than drilling, is very limited. I have the...
