Handled "punches"??

I'd like to pick up some handled punches for light tapping/punching. Why, you may ask? Because using my Torx and hex drivers as punches is something I'd like to get away from. Does such a tool exist, and if so, who makes 'em?

For light tapping, are you that unsure of where the hammer is going?

Why not use a punch handle? It is cheaper....

Because I've never heard of this "punch handle" of which you speak... It's not a question of being unsure of where the hammer is going, it's a question of having a convenient grip and easy to find tool. If there really isn't much out there, then I'll just take some crappy screwdrivers and grind the tips off. Hell, I might do that anyway for when I just feel the need to make some sparks!

I have a proto j2108 ($14 on amazon) and it works great with some cheap punches that I acquired during an enco 20% sale.

I just use regular punches and cold chisels. If you need a handle, clamp on a vise grip. They are consumables anyways. Beat on them and replace as needed.

Here are a couple different ones. Check e-bay for both handles and punches. usually they are some decent deals on slightly used ones.

Learn to use a hammer so you won't hit your hand. That's apprentice stuff. Never had handled striking tools, never will.

These are great, the williams is cheaper, but the proto had the best price on amazon.

What is wrong with vise grips?

Not that it comes up often, but that's what I use when I want an external grip on a punch or chisel:

Note that I use the type of vise grips designed to grab something hexagonal. Regular vise grips have teeth that will mar up the punch. And the scratches left behind tear up your skin the next time you're using it.

I had a Snap-On punch handle. I like the concept, the actual execution was not-so-good.

I had to spin a heli-coil into the threaded hole because the original threads were w-e-a-k.

Once heli-coiled, it's been fine. It's not a tool that can be used in every operation--sometimes the handle gets in the way--but when it works...it works well.

Buying punches and chisels with non-removable handles is something I'll leave to folks who have the nickname "Lightning" (because they never strike the same spot twice.)

I know how to use a hammer, and I'm NOT looking for handled punches because I'm concerned about hitting my hand. Here's the sort of stuff I was doing Tuesday evening While I'm nowhere near as skilled with a hammer as an old school carpenter, much less a stone carver (I suspect they're the best around), I manage to keep collisions between the striking head and me digits to a micro-minimum.

I was about to suggest you look at these made by Wilde:
http://www.harryepstein.com/index.php/wilde-punch-and-chisel-holder.html
http://www.harryepstein.com/index.php/wilde-taper-punch-set.html
http://www.harryepstein.com/index.php/pin-punch-set-5-pc.html

... but your last post talks about wood chisels, which is a difference animal altogether. So now I'm sort of confused about what you are doing? :dunno:
The mortising pics are in response to ttpete's smart *** comment. The pics from My Old Tools are right along the lines of what I have in mind, only I'd probably want a bigger handle, i.e. like "Demolition screwdrivers", only punches.

As I don't have any metal working tools, making them a la My Old Tools isn't in the cards at the moment. The "side handles" others have posted seem like they're better suited for when hard smacking is in order, or there simply isn't room to hold the punch with one's fingers/hands.

Ok, I think I understand. Basically you want a regular punch, with a screwdriver type handle on it. I'm sure such a thing must exist somewhere, but dam if I could find it online. The closest thing I could find were some gunsmithing punches; http://www.squirreldaddy.com/Large-Handle-Hollow-End-Starter-Punch-Set-p/sd20-234.htm but these are roll punches, and not meant for pounding on something like a pin/taper punch is. Good luck in your search.
