Any chance for a username edit?

I somehow fat-fingered my normal username when I registered for this site back in 2008. Now when ever I go to log into the forum after not being here for a while I get the invalid username error, because I always forget that I typed it wrong during registration. Its supposed to be...

Radiant Heat: Can I do this?

Hey all, This is my first attempt at ever dealing with radiant heat. I want to run my setup as pictured, with the grundfos pump (the red box with arrow) oriented to pump downwards. Is this okay to do? Every thing I see is with the pump set to pump upwards.

Hello all, I am putting can lights in my soffits, and am not sure of the optimal placement. I have four lights, and the wife and I cannot decide whether they would look better even spaced across the front of the garage, or if they would look better centered over each door and the window...

Hey all, When pouring a concrete parking pad up against a garage that has radiant heat, and thus 2" rigid insulation vertically on the perimeter, what do you do? Is it best to leave the insulation in place, and pour up to it, or is it best to cut the top of it off and pour up against the...

    Concrete forms for swale?

Hey all, The parking pad in front of my garage needs to have a swale in it for drainage purposes. I dont want to just form it up out of 2x6's as I want it to have a nice non-linear transition. I used to work doing concrete in the summers years and years ago, but for the life of me I cannot...

Wall Sheathing - do I need blocking?

Hey all, I have 9' sidewalls, and 4x8 sheets of OSB I plan to attach vertically. I have been told two completely conflicting code requirements by two different professionals. I was told by one union carpenter that I will have to put horizontal blocks between the wall studs where there...

stupid weather - concrete and frozen ground

Hey all, Exactly one week ago, it was sunny and 76 degrees here. We got a bunch of rain, then the temps dropped to below freezing and have stayed there for the last week. The ground is frozen about 2" down. I still have to put my 12" of sand and 2" insulation in. Can I go ahead and put...

    Roof Sheathing Calculation?

Hey all, I did a few calculations based on some formulas from both here and pathagoras. However, my calcuations are coming out way higher than what I was told I needed by Menards (a regional Home Depot/Lowes like store). They told me I needed 45-4' x 8' x 1/2" sheets of OSB for the roof...

Water and Septic in same trench

I can do it here according to our code, as long as the sewer is pressure tested to 5 PSI for 15 mins. However, I would like to know if there is anything I can put on the seams of each 4" sewer pipe (Sched 40 solid PVC) for a lil extra piece of mind? Is there any goop out there I can slop on...

Mix plywood & OSB on roof?

Hey all, I am not looking to get a debate going about plywood vs OSB. We all have our opinions on that, and I think there is even a thread on here somewhere about it. What I am looking to find out is if there are any drawbacks to mixing the two on the same roof. I have an oppertunity to...

    Insulating concrete veritcally

is it better to put the vertical insulation in pre or post pour? If you do it post pour, arent you potentially compromising the slab as some of the compacted material may come out from under the slab on the edges, and leave an air pocket?

Hey all, I designed my garage in my signmakign software as I am very familiar with it. I then sent that plan along with a google sketchup 3D view to a local building supply store (Menards) and they spit out a materials list for me. I had my carpenter buddy take a look at the materials list...
