    Your first cordless drill?

Mid~late 70s, I had a disaster from Skil, 7.2v with batteries built in. Switched to Makita shortly thereafter and and stayed for years but today it is all TOTL DeWalt for cordless as my brother works for S/B&D so they turn out cheap for pro goods.

DeWalt XR drill jumps into "turbo mode"

DeWalt DCD996 dril jumps to large power boost when bogged down. I have noticed it twice, once with 2.5"holesaw cutting hardwood and the other time it snapped .5"drill bit in two when it jammed enlarging a retainer pin hole in a trailer hitch ball mount. As the drill started to bog down there was...

The DeWalt "E clutch"? yes or no?

hVe the DeWalt DCD996 hammer drill which has the e clutch. When you hit your preset torque, there is no skip but the motor quits.I have never used the clutch as the only time I use that drill is for making large/deep holes in wood/metal/concrete so no need. All fasteners fall to the DCF887 or...

The Two Stooges/The right tool for the job

I just had an interesting experience with the next door boys! I live next to an antiques store (used to own one myself) and this afternoon with the windows open I hear a sound from our (semi shared lane) back yard. It was the sound of wrenching so I took a look outside. The pair have a trailer...

    Letter/ number stamps on tools?

I started a thread a while ago about putting stickers inside of tools to identify them in case of theft. I was shortly informed that it was a dumb idea and I agreed with that judgement however...I recently went through all of my cordless tools/batteries and stamped a 1/8" logo on each tool/...

Digital Torque adapter and testing TQ wrenches

I bought a 1/2" digital torque adapter about a year ago and so far I am impressed. I looked into how they work and why, tried one and I use it to test all of my (cheap...Tekton) wrenches with great success. I picked up a new 3/8" 10~80lb/ft wrench the other day to match the rest of a set (now...

Are "cheap" tools really of low quality or...

...are the skills/knowledge of the casual user not up to speed on the use of their tools? I started thinking about this along the lines of breaking taps or actually "breaking" a breaker bar as it were...seen all, done some. Learn to use your tools, know reasonable limits and learn the value of...

Using an impact to cut threads?

Yeah, I know, not a good idea but today I took a chance and won! I was doing a parts drawer riv nut driver...and on an early attempt I snapped a 1/4-20/2 1/2" grade 2 bolt with my DeWalt 899 because I was stupid and had it set on 3 instead of 1! I fixed the tool and afterwards was looking at...

New life for a salvaged fridge compressor...we know she blows...
