    Wooden Garage Door Repair

The bottom panels on my garage door are coming apart. I've decided to replace them individually by cutting out the rolled over wood from the back, along the lines of this guy's DIY vid. My question pertains to the choice of replacement wood. It looks like lauan is what it was made with...

    Stanley Plane ID Needed

I just disassembled my grandfather's old plane, and am trying to pinpoint the type and time period it's from.

    Quick Oscillating Multi-Tool Recommdation

Running out to Lowe's to pick up an oscillating tool to help with a grout removal job. Never owned one before. Give me some recs for a sub $100 model (corded or cordless) that's decent.

Harbor Freight 3-Ton Floor Jack: Replacing the Oil

I'd like to replace the hydraulic oil in my HF Pittsburgh 3-ton floor jack w/rapid pump (61253). Being a newb to jack maintenance, I'm wondering if there's anything besides what's in the seemingly straightforward instructions that I should do/be aware of.

Air ratchet: Which oil for the gears?

I have an old Allied Pneumatic made in Japan 3/8" air ratchet that I've partially stripped down. The instruction sheet that came with it says "Use a good quality 5 weight oil for the motor and 20 weight for the gear or impact chamber." The first part I understand--this is the standard...

    IR 301 Die Grinder Disassembly

I picked up a very tired IR 301 (not B) die grinder for $5 a while back and have decided to disassemble and clean it up. Other than the exploded diagram for the 301B, I don't have much to go on for how to proceed. I'm assuming that I should unscrew the large nut that couples the head to the body...

Adhesive/sealer for driveway gate drop rod holes?

I just finished drilling out four 3/4" holes in my driveway for gate drop rods to rest in. Each hole has a 1 1/2" long galvanized steel pipe connector inside. The fit between connector and hole is pretty tight, but I'd like to seal any gaps and the top edge between asphalt and steel I'm looking...

    Impact screwdriver and Torx bit

Need to add a manual impact screwdriver to my tool collection to assist in removing the rotor screws from my VW. The screws are T30 heads. First question: What do I want in a driver: 3/8 or 1/2"? And for the T30 bit, am I correct in assuming I need impact rated 5/16 shank? Educate me!

About to toss this Shinn Fu floor jack

I picked up this cheap 2 ton jack about 20 years ago. Pumping the handle raises the jack, but it can't lift any weight when the saddle makes contact. I assume that it has a bad seal, but I figured I'd try replacing the old oil. Well, I don't know how common this is, but there's no fill port in...

    Grease for angle grinder gearbox

This has likely been discussed before, but what do folks use to grease the gears in their angle grinders? It's the nature of grinders that any grease applied to the teeth gets flung off, which makes me wonder if there's a stickier option.

Who made this Craftsman angle grinder?

I just picked up this well-used Craftsman angle grinder. I'm going to open it up to assess the condition, but in the meantime I'd like to hear any guesses as to who the original manufacturer might have been. Says "Made in Japan" but that's all I got.

Skil Circular Saw - Magnesium Footplate Corrosion

I bought this Skilsaw new about 3 years ago, and was a bit surprised to find significant corrosion on the magnesium footplate. Bummer.

    Paint sprayer advice needed

So my property is surrounded by a Northern White Cedar picket fence stained white. It's a lot of fence, and when we bought the house three years ago, the fence was already at least 5 years past needing to be replaced. I've been trying to tackle it one panel at a time, when I can, during the...

    Tekton 3/8 flex ratchet or. . .?

I'm looking for a good quality sub $30 high tooth count flex head 3/8" ratchet, and am currently considering the Tekton SRH31108. I own two of their torque wrenches and a set of impact sockets, and have been pleased with the quality. So are there any other options I'm missing, other than HF? I'd...

    Three drawer portable tool box

I'm currently considering a Tactix 321102. I need portability, good construction quality (natch), and under $100. Craftsman is also an option, if folks think it would be worth the premium over the Tactix. I'll mostly be storing sockets, ratchets, wrenches, and other hand tools.

Air hammer for a frozen wheel bearing hub

So my first foray into air tools was necessitated by the rear wheel bearing hubs frozen to the steering knuckles of my 2011 Subaru Outback. I've used a ton of penetrating oil, heat, and whacked the hub bolts from behind using an IR 114GQC and a Grey flat face hammer bit, but that did nothing. I...

Looking for a 1/2" air impact wrench

So I need to stay at 5 - 5.5 cfm average (175 PSI, 30 Gallon tank) and under $150. Right now the IR 231C seems to be the best choice for max torque, though I could be missing other options. Lighter and quieter than the 231C would be nice. Candidates?
