Attaching an eye bolt to ceiling for hoist

Prior to building this lift, I performed a self structural engineering test by jumping up and grabbing one of the joists and swinging my 230# body imagining weighing another 70#s and eyeballing the deflection in the joist which I saw none. Same thing I lift nothing more than 300#s and use it for...

    Recessed lighting electrical question

I'm planning on installing recessed lights in my basement during a remodel, yes its not a garage but one could have the same problem. Living in the Chicagoland area we use conduit only. If I put up some recessed lights and run conduit to the recessed light junction box and make the connections...

    Insulate occasionally heated garage?

I've spent quite a few hours looking around on the internet about insulating garages. Right now its still a coin toss what I will do unless someone has some good advice for me. I have a brick attached garage with no living space above it in the Chicagoland area. The garage is not heated and...

    Drywalling my ceiling

Just bought a digital camera. Picture of my 2x6 ceiling joists which started this discussion. Still working on some other things but I'm probably going to just put 1/2" drywall up there.

    Drywalling my ceiling

Yes. I just went to home depot. Saw some tracks that nail right on the rafters to hold 2x4 or 2x2 ceiling tiles, so I dont lose ceiling height with traditional hanged ceilings. Thats what I'm going to do.

    Drywalling my ceiling

Yes. If i jump up and grab the joist in the middle of the garage, I weigh about 180#, it will deflect about 1/2" or even a bit more if I swing around. Sigh. Lately everything I do turns into a huge project. I thought about adding a few 2x8 joists..but where would I get a 24' board, how would I...

    Drywalling my ceiling

My house was built in 1971. 1st level is brick. The garage does not have a living space above it. Its a hip roof. I wouldn't say its a cheaply built house. Rafters throughout the house are 2x8 or 2x10. Just the garage is 2x6 :(. Anyone else use a drop ceiling in their garage? I've never seen...

    Drywalling my ceiling

I'm continuing work in my garage. I had a new concrete floor poured and later Floorguard coated my concrete. Prior to finding this website for research, my concrete contractor did not put a vapor barrier down, but so far so good, no problems. I ran conduit adding more outlets and lights and now...

    Electrical Question

If you run two neutral wires in a conduit, which I assume always have to be white, how would you be able to keep track of balancing the load between the two phases? For a new install I guess it would be easy, but anyone changing something or adding something later on would seem to cause confusion.

    Electrical Question

I have one conduit running to my basement and attached garage with a 14 ga / 15 amp circuit. I want to beef it up a bit and run two 12 ga / 20 amp wires / circuits to the basement and garage and make one circuit strictly for outlets at the work bench. Now I don't think you can run two neutral...

    OMG help my floor jack

Thanks Goodfellow! That schematic cleared it up for me. I put the parts in wrong. It is now working great. Tomorrow I'm going to replace the oil in the 5 HP air compressor. Hope that goes better.

    OMG help my floor jack

So my 10 year old Sears 3 Ton floor jack needed some floor jack oil because it wasn't lifting all the way up like it did when it was new. I actually had the original service manual for the jack, so instead of topping it off, I read that I could drain all the oil out if I flip the jack over. I...

    Better than epoxy?

It's been 60 days since my new garage floor was poured. I've done research on floor coatings since the pour but I'm still not sure what to do. I've read the posts on POR15 and Industrial Rustoleum but I also found companies that coat the floors with a polymer or ceramic based formula. Companies...

    Epoxy floor without vapor barrier

Has anyone had a good long lasting experience with an epoxy floor without a vapor barrier under the concrete slab? I've been bothered for the last 5 weeks after I had a new concrete slab poured in my garage without a vapor barrier. I wish I'd done some research before the pour. My garage though...

    Floorguard

Has anyone used the company Floorguard to have a coating put down on their garage floor? Reading the website, it sounds like the coating is not an epoxy but some kind of resin. My garage floor was just poured two weeks ago and I'm starting the research now. I tried the search here for Floorguard...
