Above 1200 Sq/FT The Salvage Garage

Is that press a Tinius Olsen? Multiple of decades ago I had a strength of materials class in college, and one of the units we studied was concrete formed into ASTM 6"x12" test cylinders. We froze it, put additives in it, and tested multiple days into the cure. After we capped the ends in sulfur...

    Polisher Recommendation

Harbor Freight and Amazon both have decently rated random orbit polishers for $75 or less. It'll be VERY hard to burn the paint with a random orbit polisher which is perfect for a beginner. Next more aggressive, but still pretty mild, is a orbital polisher like the Flex orbital polisher. They...

    Wheel Straightening equipment?

It's been common practice for quite a while, but I understand that might not make it proper. There are commercial shops who have done these repairs for decades. I believe a little heat helps prevent cracks during the repair, and it is common to weld small cracks during the repair.

    Wheel Straightening equipment?

Something like this. Or this. This one looks great, but I think it's very expensive.

Any Tire guys here? Trouble mounting a tire

Done. Beaded up completely at 80 psi. There are youtube videos of people intentionally blowing up tires, and it takes a lot more than 100psi typically. 39 CAMC what do you run in CAMC? I'm thinking of tuning my car, and getting wider tires and running CAMC. I'm not fast, but I'm having a blast.

    Wheel Straightening equipment?

Anybody have the equipment for home straightening of alloy car wheels. The roads here are terrible, and I've got two bent wheels. I'd be willing to spend up to $1500 buy something. Local shops charge at least $100 to straighten wheels, so it'd pay for itself pretty quickly.

Any Tire guys here? Trouble mounting a tire

Got it to pop by driving on it with 55 psi and jamming on the brakes. No joy just turning the steering wheel on the ground. I'm so f'n tired and hot I put the other front on in the wrong rotation. Cooling off then flipping it, going for a ride, and pulling it to balance, but I'll try 80 or 90...

Any Tire guys here? Trouble mounting a tire

I have new tires for my '16 ATS-V, and I have a Coats 70XAH tire changer. My wheels have a steep outside step on them and it's keeping the new front tires 265/35/18 Brigestone RE71r's from beading all the way up. They hold air but there's a 6" portion on the outside where the tire won't bead all...

Mechanics: Tips and tricks you've learned

Make a living working on things that people making a living with. They will pay and pay to get it done correctly. Cars not so much. Get some valve lapping compound. Re-use roLoc discs ?

Just cut them with tin snips. No need to try to cut them in a circle. A series of straight lines works fine. The disc is a little more aggressive until it wears the points off.

    HF Icon tool box prices

Ever try to buy parts for anything from HF? For me a better deal doesn't always have to do with price/value.

    HF Icon tool box prices

I'm in they're overpriced boat. I'll buy a used $3500 Snap On, Matco, Mac... triple bay before I spend $3500 on a higher end HF box. Plenty of big clean used name brand boxes in this price range.

Free Coats 70xAH3 Tire Changer story/questions

My brother and I bought 2 Coats 70xAH3 (air motor) tire changers for $1100 from a guy who buys obsolete Walmart equipment. He likes refrigeration, and these were part of a package bid. He just wanted them out of his warehouse. One was missing parts and was sold as a parts machine. It was...

Harbor Freight 12” disc sander YES or NO?

I have the 12" HF disc sander. I think it works fine for what it is and costs. I don't think it has the nuts that a higher quality sander would, but it's fine as long as you pay attention and don't bog it down.

    Converting a GregSmith Pro 8000 from 110 to 220

It doesn't like my 4000lb car. It won't always start and sometimes blows the breaker. I had it up for over a year before I modified the ceiling enough to use it for cars. It went up fine when I was just using it as a big shelve.

    Converting a GregSmith Pro 8000 from 110 to 220

Looks like a complete 220V power unit can be bought for $150-$200. I couldn't find a replace motor for less than that.

    Converting a GregSmith Pro 8000 from 110 to 220

I wish I would have bought a 220V 4 post instead of a 110. Is it possible to rewire these motors? I don't see a tag or a removable cover like other multi-voltage motors I've seen.
