Wow!... I didn't know they were that expensive! I have two of them with 5-1/2" jaws - one in the garage and the other in my basement. They were salvaged from the trash at work. They were thrown out because they got bent from abuse. Some filing brought them back in alignment.

I perfer having no cabinets in the workroom. The doors get in the way. I like to quickly grab things and move on. No cabinets under the bench either. It's ergonomically easier if you can tuck your feet under the bench while working. It reduces the amount of bending over and back fatigue.

Is this fluid petroleum based? I would filter it through paper towel and dump it in your gas tank in small doses. Win-win.

Consider using austempered ductile iron. It's gained considerable popularity over the past 30 years as a way of making cast iron very strong.

I'm an occasional user of oxy-acetylene. I bought the set mainly to loosen rusty automotive bolts and sometimes braze metals together. I bought the "44" size shown in the picture, and I've only half emptied the tanks after 34 years.

Turtle, start by squirting some penetrant a day or two before digging into the job. Heck, next time you're under the car, try to loosen the assembly for some peace of mind. Once loosened, the job is half done.

My workbench is an old beefy butcher block, 9' by 3' by 3" from maple wood. I made six legs out of 2 by 6 wood laying around and secured the bench to the wall. I can freely hammer on it, stand on it, and do anything without wobble. I hate wobble.
